I am 35 years old and took Accutane when I was a teenager and now have severe IBS-Diarreah. I have heard rumors of Accutane causing problems later in life. Have you heard anything substantial?

hey- i just posted a new message about my digestive dilemnas, before i read this-
i took accutane 6 years ago and now i am having alot of digestive probs.... my doc thinks i may have Inflammatory Bowel Disease and i am getting tested to find out. I have read that they still have a lot to learn about the causes- i was kind of thinking that a case of severe samonella poisoning i had about 4 years ago was the trigger- but maybe my case of food poisoning was so severe because my digestive system was damaged or weakened by the accutane! let me know your thoughts on this or if you know any sites i can find out more on this topic! thanks.

I am 24 years old and have also developed IBS about 6 years after taking Acutane. It wasn't until I read this post that I have linked the two. I am an otherwise healthy individual and this IBS was a mystery to me. Could the Accutane be the cause of my IBS???

Look at the May,2000 updated pharmaceutical insert on Accutane. (Be sure that it is the revised/updated insert.)
IBS is listed as a possible side effect.
I have not looked specifically for Accutane(also known as isotretinoin, 13 cis retinoic acid)and IBS/gastro problems in medical abstracts/letters on Med sites. I am sure you can find that info. that led Roche to list IBS as a possible side effect.

My son of 23yrs has had digestive problems with chronic stomache pains and spasms on and off for over 2 years. The doctors and hospital decided it could be one of the following: Colic, chronic collic, IBS, involuntary spasms etc etc. After exhaustive tests over the last 18months - with still one more to go - they have decided they are no nearer an answer than they were when they started! Due to the chronic pain he hardly ate and lost loads of weight which he could ill afford to lose at the time. He took Ro-accutaine for acne at 17yrs old and I am passing all this info back to the doctors in due course to see exactly what answers they can come up with and will post it back on yhe board for all to see. click on consumer info. or search--type in the word, accutane. There is an article written by Laurel Prokop about digestive/gastrointestinal disorders and Accutane. She was also featured on the radio show sometime in July or early August. There will be other links listed at the bottom of her article.

Isotretinoin; Possible component of inflammatory bowel disease
---Ann J. Gastroentoral, 1999 Sept.;94(9):2568
Inflammatory Bowel Disease and isotretinoin
---J Am Acad Dermatol, 1986 May; 14: 843
There are other medical articles on this particular subject plus articles about crohns disease, muscle damage induced by isotretinoin(Accutane), bone changes induced by isotretinoin, etc. The sites I mentioned previously will give you some good links in getting started on your search.

Please go to Representative Bart Stupaks web site on Accutane. His son suffered a fatal adverse event linked to Accutane use. He is a representative from Michigan. He organized a Congressional hearing back in Dec. of 2000 on Accutane/adverse events and hopes to have another one sometime this fall or winter which may need to be delayed until spring 2002 due to the terrorist crisis.
IBS or intestinal problems are not one of the problems that I am directly involved with pertaining to adverse events occuring to a family member nor was it for Representative Stupak's son. However, we are interested in ALL adverse events linked, suspected, confirmed or connected with Accutane therapy.

I had acne since I was 16. I didn't want to take it. At 26, after detoxifying and doing the liver purge, I still had major acne. My "alternative" MD put me on half the usual dosage for half the usual time and I stopped after having stomach cramps. Six months later I started feeling all sorts of symptoms, but mainly I had digestive issues such as spasms and bloating. I became very sensitive to different foods. Eventually I found NAET to help with all these issues and highly recommend finding a good practicioner no matter what you issues you have.
