Here are 2 threads where we discussed LP. I had a fairly easy time, others not so much.

Here is what I posted:
I had mine about a month ago, and while it is a little uncomfortable, I really felt no pain. They give you a shot of novocaine or a similar pain killer to numb the site. This burns for a moment. If you have ever had stitches or a mole removed, it is similar to that fleeting pain. The actual puncture was not bad. I think it is simply the thought of someone putting a needle in your spine that is the worse part. I was face down on the table and felt pretty relaxed. It is best to rest for a while right after the puncture to avoid headaches but in an hour I was at the Mall!

Good luck to you.

I had one done a couple of years ago and did not feel a thing. Made sure I was numbed up well 1st and did what the doctor told me through whole thing. Had a bad headache next day but it was honestly nothing like what I was DREADING. I think the experience truly depends on the doctor & you relaxing(??) and taking the advice they give. Maybe you should have someone with you to hold your hand etc- it might be more relaxing for you.

My experience was fine and I would have no fear going again. Hope it goes well - let us know how you got on.

Well tomorrow is my big day for the puncture and I'm starting to get nervous. Do you think I should take something for pain before hand?

My diagnosis came from an MRI and blood work only so I don't have an answer for you but I wanted to pop in and wish you good luck. I hope it's relatively painless and quick for you.

mlong, I don't think I would take anything without the knowledge of your physician. I was a little scared and in retrospect might have asked for some anxiety meds but it went well. I had my procedure under fluoroscope, it did take two tries but I do not remember any pain other than the anesthetic sting.
I will be thinking of you, good luck. LL
