View Full Version : Would Heart Failure from arrhythmia be just as fatal as HF from something else?

Such as heart disease.

If A-Fib weakened the heart but later the A-Fib was treated and cured would the heart still continue to weaken or would the process stop?

MHossa,

I would think that once the A-fib is effectively treated, the risk of HF and strokes (from clots) would stop increasing. Probably a weakened heart would actually improve over time.

Hi MHossa,

To give some perspective, HF is the heart's inability to pump adequately a blood supply to meet system's demand for oxygen.

A-fib can stagnate blood flow in the receiving chamber and cause clots and impede the the amount of blood getting into the pumping chamber. The consequence is not enough blood is pumped into circulation and virtually heart failure.

Almost always the diagnoses of heart failure usually is the result of thickening of heart walls, enlargement, muscle damage and a valve disorder. Without any of those problems, and no A-fib, the amount of blood pumped into circulation should be normal with an efficiency fraction of 55 to 70%. If the A-fib caused the heart to compensate with an enlargement and some wall thickening, relief from A-fib will/should stop further compensation and an enlarged heart will return to normal size.

Last year I was told is A-fib. The blood count was all normal at that time.

Now Dr said is anxiety. I wasn't on any medication or treatment of it. I'm still feel a lot of palp and chest tightness (I've a pacemaker). My haemoglobin and iron is very low at the moment. I wander to know, if that possible the heart didn't pump up properly and affected the oxygen low. So it affected my blood count drop? Or the other way round? But was A-Fib came before the anemia.

I would like someone to give me a suggestion or contribute some knowledges!

Thanks

Pika.

Pika,
If I read you correctly your scenario was that you had A-fib and they gave you a pacemaker to cure it. It worked but now you still feel palpitations and chest discomfort?
If your cardiologist has checked and double checked your pacemaker and your rhythm is okay, then he's probably right: anxiety.

It's not likely to be related to your anemia which should be treated as a separate issue. There are MANY causes for the different types of anemia.

Pika,

If your heart was pumping inefficiently (pacemaker problem) there would/could be a backup of blood (not pumped out as necessary), and in an advanced state there could/would be a respiration condition causing an imbalance of oxygen to carbon dioxide (CO2). If your CO2 count is within expected range there probably is no heart or lung problem.

A deficit of hemoglobin would be the anemia and could indicate a blood processing dysfunction, and there would be a decrease in capacity to carry oxygen throughout the system. As expected there would be weakness, paleness, poor apetite...

I don't believe the lack of oxygen with anemia would cause a heart problem by reducing oxygen to the heart muscle!
