View Full Version : Chemo and Excercise, what are you doing?

I am not doing anything on the days where i'm actively receiving chemo; but once i recover - i've been riding my bike and going for walks. Neither one of these feats are very impressive in terms of stamina, buti figure anything is better than nothing at this point.

I try to go 7 miles every other day on my bike, and 1 mile on the alternate days walking. I've also worked in a small weight regimen on the days i walk. Add to that mowing lawns, and some general lawn care, and i think i'm doing alright.

I'm pretty happy with this routine. It's not going to get me in tip top shape, but the sense of accomplishment, and just getting out to get some fresh air helps tremendously.

Anyone else care to share their routine?

Phil:
It's a lot more than many of us were/are able to do during chemo. Don't push it too hard. I'll reiterate what I was told time and again: when your body tells you to rest...rest. :nono:

Hang in there,
CancerDad

CD, thanks. like i said - i am not doing anything on actual chemo days. i spent most of the day yesteray horizontal.

I wait until 1-2 days post-treatment before i attempt any sort of workout. I think i'm being careful and do also feel that i'm listening to my body and proceeding cautiously. Luckily the side effects have been minimal (sensitivity to cold, and fatigue mostly) So in a way i'm waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Phil and Christy, good for you. When you feel okay, it doesn't hurt to do some exercise, just don't overdo it. Even a little exercise probably helps your body, it definitly helps your mind, and it helps to give you a sense of normalcy.

I COMPLETELY agree that whatever exercise you do can be beneficial. The endorphins that are released will help your body. Just keep in mind that the chemo they are putting in your body is killing good cells too, which require your body to expend energy repairing and getting rid of free radicals. So, just a tip-- don't push it too hard, and stay well-hydrated.

I've been doing chemo for a year now and the longer I go, the harder it has been to exercise on regular basis. I was running 45-55 minutes at least 5 days a week at first, now I run 3-4 times for maybe 30 minutes. I keep going on long walks and whatever else I can do. I think its critical to keep active the best way you can. Some days its hard and no fun, but I feel the need to push through it.
