Does anybody take a long time to digest their food?
I had an endoscpy today and I last had something to eat at 10pm the night before and my last drink at 6am this morning. I had my test at 8.30am and the doc asked when I last ate and I told him and he said I still had a lot of food in my stomach. Has anyone else had this problem? My stomach is very bloated so much so I look pregnant and I get terrible back pain in my back in what seems to be behind the stomach. It hurts so much at times I cant lie on my back to sleep.

Hi,
Sorry to hear about your problems. Did the endoscopy show anything?
It is just possible that you have something like a hiatis hernia or at the other end, which is the pyloris muscle that is interfering with you digestion. The back pain is probably referred pain, but if your belly is also bloated, then this maybe related to something lower down in your intestines.
Go and discuss it again with your doc and see what he says. Hopefully your endoscopy may show something.
Let me know.
Cheers

Sarah They took a small biopsy of the lining of the stomach and the paper they gave me says Biopsy for H> pylori(urease test) I have no idea what this means maybe you have an idea what this means. I would be glad of your input. Thanks

Hi Fifi,
H. Pylori is a bug that can cause stomach ulcers and other problems. The H stands for Helicobacter. If your test comes back positive, they can give you medication for it. If this is the cause and they give you medication, then this will hopefully resolve the discomfort and bloating you are getting in your lower belly.
Hope this helps?
Let me know how you get on.
Take care

Did your dr mention the possibility of gastroparesis?
Have you had other symptoms other than the bloating?

Did your dr mention anything about gastroparesis (it is a delayed emptying disorder). Your dr can do an emptying study to determine if gastroparesis is a possibility.

Sarah I had a phone call from my doc today and the H pylori was positive he said I have to take two types of antibiotics and losec. Do you know how we get this bug, and what other effects it can have on us symptom wise?

Missy No the doc hasn't mentioned that to me. Doctors here tend to dismiss everything as part of getting older and that its common and that attitude so brsses me off.

Hi,
Well, I am glad that you have found the cause of your symptoms and that they are now being treated. You must feel quite relieved? As least you know what it is.
As for where we get it, well. I think some people just get it in the course of daily living and I think that it can also be one of those bugs that lives in the system and can manifest at times of stress.
If you have it all symptoms can be different. As you had, you may feel quite full and have epigastric fullness and also feeling that you are taking a long time to digest food. You could vomit and you may get some pain in your belly at times. This would probably tend to be upper belly rather than lower belly though. Diarrhea is not likely I think, but at its extreme and if not properly treated, it can cause stomach ulcers and if one burst you can get severe stomach pain, vomiting of blood and blood in the stools.
Sorry, I don't mean to scare you, but as you are now on the right treatment, hopefully you should not experience these symptoms.
Take care and good luck.

Sarah Thanks for your kind words. Other symptoms I have are fluid retention, excessive weight gain, constipation and skin problems. I dont know if they are all related or not but I will see how things go once I start the treatment.

Hi Fifi,
If you have had constipation, then your skin problems may be related to this. Have you suffered from long term constipation?
You need to add a lot more fibre to your diet and also eat plenty of fruit and veg. Go out and buy some prunes and drink some prune juice. You also need to drink plenty of fluids. I know this sounds silly if you say that you have fluid retention. This could all be part of the same problem. If you are constipated it means that you are retaining a lot of waste products within your system. Once you have solved your constipation problem, you may find that you can pee a whole lot more. Hopefully your belly may then feel less bloated, if it did and you will feel a lot better in yourself.
Also go and talk to your pharmacist and try a get something called Metamucil.
Try all these suggestions in conjunction with the new meds from your doc and hopefully you will be feeling better in no time.
Good luck.
