Hi everyone. I had my endoscopy today and I just wanted to give everyone the details of my experience. In case anyone is having one soon and wants to know what to expect.
When I arrived at the office I had to give a urine sample. Then I was told to put on a gown, slippers, and a hair net. I was allowed to leave on my own pants and socks. They hooked me up to an I.V. , those oxygen things for your nose, and various monitors for my heart rate and blood pressure etc... I was wheeled into the operating room about 20 minutes later.
My doctor was there as well as an anesthesiologist and a nurse. The doctor had me turn on my left side, he put a mouth piece around my teeth and the anesthesiologist told me to count to 10 and that I would be taking a nice little nap he also said that I might feel a slight burning as he put something into my I.V. (I didn't). I got to 10 and said "um i'm still awake" he told me not to worry and that was the last thing that I remember. When I woke up I was in the recovery room. Apparantly I had a conversation with the nurse about my sister that I don't quite remember. They gave me juice, and after I was able to sit up, an oatmeal cookie. The doctor told me everything looked fine and that he took a biopsy to test for H.Pylori. My results will be back in a few days.
If I do not have H.Pylori, he wants to see me in 4 weeks, if I do, sooner. I saw pictures of my esophagus and intestines (yuck).
After that, I was able to leave, with my husband to drive me of course. I still feel a little odd. All together from the time I was wheeled into the operating room til the time that I left the hospital was about 1 hour.
Believe me when I say, do not worry. You are not aware of or do you remember anything unpleasant. Right now I just have a mild sore throat. I think the worst part was waiting to go into the procedure itself.
Hi taape, I hope this helps calm your fears a little. I know I was terrified this morning and am so glad it is done. I wish you the best of luck and hope that everything turns out okay :)

Hi! I am a "thyroid board" person who has just migrated to this board for the first time -- I'm totally freaked out right now -- I won't go into the whole mess but I'm hypothyroid and have been going through one health crisis after another for 6 weeks. Each has "self-resolved" despite tons of tests all of which didn't show anything, or only showed what we already knew. Anyway, most recent was blood in stools for only 2 times and now all fine. I'm nauseous and dizzy -- the dizziness has always been the thyroid up to this point so I am hoping that is it. Trying to get in to see a specialist and they said they want to do an endoscopy and I am totally freaked out so this was very very very helpful. Thank you!

So very happy for you that everything was all right. I beet you are glad it is all over. I wish mine on Friday will be that easy. hOwever, I do not think I am going to be put all the way out. Last time I had the colon scope done I was in that light sleep and was up through the whole thing. The same doctor is doing it so I will not be that lucky.
I amgald for you and now you can be relieved.

Eve_8,
Thanks for posting - I hope I can do as well as you did. I'm still dreading next Monday. So you don't remember them putting the camera down your throat? I hope your tests turn out ok and you don't have h pylori.

Hi Tlily, I actually asked the anesthesiologist about the difference between the colonoscopy and endoscopy as far as sedation was concerned and he said that you are actually given less for the colonoscopy. When you a colonoscopy you are generally awake but calmer. He said that when you get the endoscopy you are "out". (I think technically you are awake, but you do not remember a thing.") As long as you are getting sedation, I bet it will be the same way for you. I wish you the best :)
Hi Taape, I don't remember the camera, at all. Have you ever had any surgery done? If so, it was just like that. You remember them telling you to count and the next thing you remember is the recovery room. I even got a biopsy and I don't feel any thing. Please try not to worry, I am sure your's will work out the same way. Thanks for your good wishes :)

Eve - glad things went OK, from the procedure to the results so far! :)
Told you so! It's great when they knock you out. If I know I going to be knocked out - I'm OK!
My IV did burn - and in fact, it ached from my middle finger tip through my lower arm for several days before it all wore off.
When I woke up I was in the recovery room. Apparantly I had a conversation with the nurse about my sister that I don't quite remember.
Do you mean this was in the recovery area?
Anyway, it reminds me of a nurse who came to check on me in recovery, saying I was talking about "someone make sure my dog is OK" during the procedure! :D (My dog is special too - she has allergies and also colitis we've been fighting.)

Ol'Line Rebel, That sucks that you did feel the burning. I guess I was just lucky. I wonder what causes that.
Yeah it was in the recovery room. My sister is an actress in the Pennsylvania Rennaissance Faire and I was telling the nurse about it. I just found it so funny because I do not know how this would come up at all, lol. I probably said something stupid, like "hi my sister is in the Rennaisance Faire." The nurse must of thought it was funny, I don't usually just blurt that out to strangers for no reason, lol. After the conversation, I remembered it but I thought that I dreamed it. So I asked her if we were just talking about my sister and she said yes and that a lot of the time people tell her things when they first come into recovery that they don't remember the second time she comes over by them.
I don't know if I talked in the room itself. If I did no one told me. Maybe I told them all about my sister too :o

Well, I do apparently have a predisposition to this kind of thing. I've been married 1 year now, and in that time my husband has sometimes heard me say things. The 1st 1 was "mumblemumblemumble...8602" (end of our phone #). Another time I had a ghostie dream (I definitely was aware of this; I awoke myself thanks to this) in which I started growling/yelling at the ghosts "You G..D.. ghost get the !$#! out of this house!" I've also said other things I don't remember.
I still remember my favorite cousin telling me 1 morning as a child when we slept together that I had said "You take her I'll take the other 1"! (May have been referring to horses, as she had horses and we took riding lessons together every Summer.)
Until I got married noone stayed sleeping with me, so I didn't really know I had this proclivity to speak at night, dream or not! :jester:
As for the burning, no biggie. I'd trade this nasty never-ending "reflux" for that any day!

There are some anesthesia IV meds or IV pain meds that burn as it goes through your veins. This happened to me during my last surgery a few months back. The anesthologist told me in advance but it didn't feel good, then I konked out. It didn't have any lingering pain after I woke up.
