FloridaBob 06-07-2006, 02:14 PM I am a 54 year old male. I have been hearing my heartbeat in my left ear for about 5 years now. This is constant and never stops. The sound tends to mask out other sounds such as male voices and therefore affects my ability to hear. Is there anyone else out there who is experiancing the same thing?
midwest1 06-08-2006, 12:40 PM Have you had it medically checked out? Lots of things that cause that symptom are relatively benign; but it can also mean serious, even life-threatening, problems... like carotid artery blockage or malformation.
If you haven't been to a doctor about it, don't delay in getting there now.
FloridaBob 06-08-2006, 07:06 PM Yes I have been to 2 doctors and an audioligist. Suprisingly the doctors didn't seem too concerned. One referred me to the audioligist. The audioligist kept referring to tinitus and his only suggestion was a masking device to help mask the sound. The last thing I want is more noise
midwest1 06-08-2006, 10:18 PM Suprisingly the doctors didn't seem too concerned.Well gee... Don't you sometimes just have to wonder what MDs are good for?
Maybe you could get a noise machine from a store with a good return policy in case it doesn't work out. It's worth a shot.
Hope it gets better for you, Bob.

Hi FB,
Thank GOD someone else said something about this and they have been to their doctor and found nothing..and another bonus is that you are in your 50's and had it five years.I haven't had it but for about a month and have tried to research everything about it.I have had it told to me that it could be sinus, ear blockage ...fluid in the ear, wax,or the really scarry thing cartorid artery blockage and being anxious ...you know that Im going to take the worst case selection.I don't really have any pain, and nothing unusual besides being able to hear my breathing and my neck turn and also a constant heartbeat...Hopefully it won't be anything to be concerned about.I have read many many things about this symptom and many people have had ct's ,mri's etc etc etc..and the most their doctors have done is give them anxiety medicine. It could be that we just moved to 8000 ft above where we used to live and also I have constant ear infections and sinus ,and allergies all my life. But thank you so much for asking and if you have had it five years and been ok..and going to doctors..then maybe I have hope..Thats the funny thing..My heart rate is perfect and bp are good and I was at the doctor about a month ago and he said everything looked good...that was right before I started experiencing this...But once again ..thank you and yes ..know there are like thousands and thousands just online that are experiencing this and not knowing what it is...Michael
patricia jean 09-07-2006, 09:49 PM Hello FB... I am a female in my late 50's and I have been hearing my heart beat in both ears awake or asleep for.....Oh.....around 10 years now...and I was told that it was anxiety...sometimes it gets so loud while I am "trying " to sleep that it sounds like the neighbors have there stereo up full blast...but it's only me ! :dizzy:
mkgbrook 09-08-2006, 09:39 AM FloridaBob,
I do not have chronic ear pulsations like you, but whenever I have a bad sinus/ear infection and fluid packs into my ears... I hear my heartbeat.
Have you been to the ENT? If it is chronic fluid retention and it is affectiong your hearing they might be willing to do a simple outpatioent procedure like ear tubes to help drain fluid from your ears. The other non-surgical method would be decongestants and nasal sprays. If none of these options help you, you might want to go to a cardiologist. A cardiologist would definitely check you over well, because hearing your own heart beat is a side effect /symptom linked to an arterial clot.
Best Wishes on fixing the problem.
Sincerely,
MG

I had the problem of hearing my heartbeat too in one ear. After going to doctors and trying different things they finally sent me to have an MRI and an MRA. They said I have a kink in an artery and likened it to when you have a kink in your garden hose. The sound you hear as the water is going through the kinked garden hose, kind of like the sound you hear as your blood is going through the arteries. He said I would just have to live with it but at least now I know what it is.

What's an MRI, and an MRA?
pisces1 11-05-2006, 11:02 AM I have this when I am in bed. It's so clear that it sounds like the bass from a neighbour's music system. I hear it when my head is on the pillow, but when I lift my head up, I don't. I also hear it more in my left ear, and my left eustacian tube is blocked, so it makes some sort of sense. I had the same problem before the ear blockage, but it's much worse now.
makingsenseout 11-20-2006, 05:23 AM Look up patulous eustacian tube and you will all mostly find what you are looking for..I have the same thing.. drfives me crazy and scares me to death.. but well what can i say.. There isn't much you can do for it but there are some temporary treatments.. that can be found wherever you find this on a site..
heather31 12-20-2006, 07:31 AM I also have the same symptoms in my left ear, plus other symptoms as well. You should see an ENT, it sounds to my like a patchulous eustachian tube. Unfortunately on 3% of the worlds population has this and to date there is no cure that I can find. I have had PET for the last 6 years.
