I need some help! I am going insane! My son will be 2 the 26th of June and he weighs 22lbs. When he was an infant he was on Lactose Free Formula due to fussiness. Sometimes the bottles would come back up (out the nose and mouth). We had his crib mattress elevated. Then we went through a good time where he would puke once a month. Now for the past month or so he is back to puking his nightime milk cup (just out the mouth). We have to supplement him with Carnation Instant Breakfast because he will not eat table food. (Whole other story!) Anything with textures he will gag until he pukes. We have been to an ENT and they are talking about taking out his tonsils, thinking they might be gagging him. I am wondering if he has acid reflux. We used to put Tiny Tummies in every bottle he had. We might start doing that with the milk cups to see if it helps. His 2 year check up is the 26th and we will be addressing these issues.....but if there is anyone out there with some advice or something....I could really use it!
Thank you so much for listening!

My 2 yr old daughter has alot of similar kind of issues. Like the poor weight and stomache issues. Have you seen a gastroenterologist yet? If not I would definetely suggest it. The carnation is good,I have to use that also. Since her 1 st birthday she has gained (and Loses) a total of 4 lbs she is now 30 1/2 months old. She can't get in with a Gi dr till the end of july. Very busy dr's.
I hope all goes well.

I am so sorry that there is someone else suffering like Lance is, but it is helpful. I have not had him see a GI doctor yet. I was going to wait until his pedi appt and see if she can diagnose it. I do hope that all goes well with your child also. Thank you so much for responding.

I am suprised your pedi hasn't already reffered to a Gi,I would definetely ask to see one. They are more able to do different types of testing and get to the problem. I hope all goes well.
Good Luck at the dr appt.

Hi jaime b. I really feel for you at the moment. Both my daughters(16&14) were lactose intolerant. Numerous feeding problems even after diagnosed. Daughter #1 had the *texture* problem when it came to solid food, and is still an extremely fussy eater to this day. Daughter #2 was a different problem all together. Still couldn`t keep milk down, still fussing and appeared to still be in pain. Armed with all past history in hand, I changed paediatritians and finally we were told her problem was a mix of the intolerance and having an "under shot jaw". A development problem with the jaw ,that I was assured will correct it`s self, and it did. Maybe not the same problem you are going through but I know how you feel and I sympathize. Research! Research! Research! all the symptoms and throw a few suggestions of what you think the problem may be at the experts. They may be trained, but you may just open there eyes to the solution. Chin Up! there is hope

It is just so comforting to me to know that we are not the only ones out there with this problem. I feel like I have been battling this with my husband for so long...I just get alittle tired. I can give some good news though. We have gone back down to stage 2 fruits (more variety) and still with the oatmeal. He is doing good (x 2 days now!). And last night we tried the Tiny Tummies in his last sippy cup and no puke! We also cracked open his door so he could know that we are still there. I don't know if he is going through some separation stuff right now or not, but I think that if we stop the crying, then maybe it might get better. And he was only up 1 time with his teeth!
Thank you all for you support. It really does boost my thoughts and moods! It is so nice to know there are people out there who have gone through this or something like this and they came out okay! I will keep posting here with updates and about pedi (June 26th) and ENT (July 5) appts.

Lance has been doing good for about a week now. He has not puked any milk, but he is eating less. We do try to force anything and everything down him. He likes to drink cause it is easier. He is getting his 1st molars and his "I" teeth! :bouncing: I know that they are painful cause he is up at night screaming like we are killing him. We have been pushing motrin and orajel about every 6 hours. I just feel so bad for him. I hope when the teething subsides, then the eating will get better. :D If not, then I will definately let you all know!
Have a wonderful Monday!

BeautifulMama, My daughter just turned 2 on June 5, and is 31 lbs, so I think that is a fairly normal weight.
For the past 3 weeks she has turned into a VERY picky eater. I'm hoping it is just a phase, but I've had to start using pediasure, b/c she just doesn't want to eat. I have to fight just to get a few bites of each meal in her.

that I am saying that your children are overweight... That is not it at all. I am just concerned because we are on the other end of that scale. I would love for Lance to be 30lbs or so, but that is not the case! I did not mean to offend anyone here, and if I did, then I am sorry. I was just looking for some help with dealing with this gag issue and my son's low weight. Just support! It is nice for me to know that there are other children out there that have maybe gone through this or something like this and how they dealt with the situation!

Hello All!!
I just wanted to keep you up to date on Lance, incase you wanted to know. We have been consistantly putting the Tiny Tummies in his last sippy cup of the night and cracking his door and have had no problems. His food intake is actually going up some too. I think the poor food intake is due to teething too. He is getting all 4 1st molars and his "I" teeth on the top! He is not screaming much at night either. Since we have gotten some things straight with him, we are probably going to try the earlier bedtime. I think that he needs that cause his bedtime right now is 9:30PM. We may start earlier and see how it goes. Lance goes for his 2 year check up on the 26th and I will let you all know how that goes! Thank you for all of your support! You have helped me through a low couple of days, but everyday gets alittle better! :)
Have a wonderful day!!

I just wanted to let you all know that Lance has not had any "Linda Blair" spells in almost 2 weeks. I am so excited. He goes in spurts where he will eat the baby food, and then he won't. But he is getting 6 teeth. The pain is getting better for him with those teeth cause he is not waking up as much at night. He has been getting up earlier, though! This is how I feel today after being up with him since 5AM! And we are not even trying to cut back his bedtime yet. He did lay down with me some and we finally got up at 6AM, gave him some milk and laid around the livingroom until I had to get in the shower (6:45AM). While we were laying down he kept saying "there" and "where" and "look" all while pointing! I think I have created a monster!
Have a great day!

Hello All!
I don't know what started it, but we almost had another episode last night. Lance was sitting with me on the couch and he suddenly got down. He looked at me and I asked him "Are you okay?" Well he started to look sick and I rushed him over to the kitchen floor. He ended up puking alittle and I was hitting his back. It could have been so much worse, but I am glad that it wasn't! I don't know why, but I can really read my son to know when something like that happens. I am so thankful that I am in the right place at the right time, most of the time. He had an episode a month or so back where he was puking in his crib and he was on his back. I went in to check on him cause I heard him coughing and found him starting to puke on his back with his mouth filled with puke! I wigged out and snatched him up by 1 hand. That is why I am so thankful that I am "up my child's butt" as my husband calls it! If I had not been there.....Well I don't want to think about that!
Have a great weekend!! I will post on Monday about the 2 year appt!

Has he been tested for food allergies?
I was thinking of food allergies or a floppy valve .. kind of like acid reflux. My daughter was like this but she had liver disease, so what I have to say as far as experience wont count here! If puking is all you have.. count your blessings and grab a bucket! :p
Seriously though, we had the problem with choking on and aspirating vomit. We used a sleep wedge to keep her on her side and if she insisted on her back we had a wedge for that too.Different kinds. You can get foam rubber ones with a cloth covering.. Im sure you already know about mounds of pukey laundry. Youll appreciate the removable cover.

I was wondering about food allergies also. My daughter has had an allergy to dairy since she was born (I breastfed her and couldn't have dairy at all until she weaned).
Milk allergy is different than lactose intolerance because it's an immune response to the milk protein and not an enzyme deficiency as is the case with lactose intolerance.
Celiac disease is something else to consider (autoimmune reaction to gluten). We have not completely ruled this out with my daughter. She turned 3 earlier this month and is only 25lbs. (she was 8.5lbs when she was born). She gets a lot of tummy aches and diarrhea.
She was tested for a variety of things (diagnosed with failure to thrive) but all was relatively normal.
Has he been tested for GERD?
Anyway, I hope you find your answers!! It can be extremely distressing to have a little one who can't "hold his milk":) and it's even worse not knowing why.

Hi Jaime. I wanted to update about my 2 yr old daughter she is on the little side also. I think i was the 2nd to post on this thread. But she is 31 months and about 27 lbs. I just found out through a blood test that she tested positive for Celiac Disease. I am waiting for the hospital to call to make her appt for an upper enoscopy. They have to do a biopsy on her small intestine. Every symptom she has had involves this. So I hope all turns out well for your son and you.

Hello All!
I seriously wished I would have read your responses before our Pedi Appt yesterday! Lance is 2 years old weighing 22lbs 10oz (below 5%), 34 1/4 inches (over 25%) and his head circumference is 20 1/4 inches (over 95%). They drew blood, he is not anemic. I don't know where he is getting the iron from, but he is. His pedi said that if he was doing fine on the Lactose Free Whole Milk to keep him on that. So far, that has not been an issue, as far as I can tell. I did tell her about the Tiny Tummies in his sippy cups and the elevation of the mattress and she said all of that was fine. I did talk to her about acid reflux and she said that could possibly be. She put him on a trial of Zantac BID to see if that helps him. She wants us to go back in 6 months to get weighed but not more check-ups until 3!:) She also said that her personal opinion was that Lance's tonsils & adenoids should come out. I have a copy of his growth chart to show the ENT on July 5th and will let you all know about that appointment. I may talk to her the next time he gets sick about the food allergies, or the Celtic problem. I am going to do some research on that!
Thank you all for your concern. We are thriving, just at a slow rate! With all of the problems that Lance has, and everything he is going through, I could not have asked for a BETTER KID!!
Have a great day!

I have no idea what happened, but last night Lance woke up screaming. I mean screaming like someone was killing him! When I picked him up from his crib, he almost didn't want to be consoled. I gave him Motrin, thinking it might be his teeth and the Tiny Tummies for his stomach. He did quiet down about 5 minutes after both of those were given and did go back to sleep. There were no other screams last night but that one. I am so thankful that we are getting the Zantac today so we will start him on it tonight. Oh, I can tell you that all day yesterday, he did have the hiccups. Maybe growing pains?? I don't know.
Claflamme...I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. I do hope that everything goes well for you and her in the upcoming months! My thoughts and prayers will be with you and her. I did do some research on that Celiac Disease, and it is something I am going to bring up to the pedi when we go back. Lance does have some of the symptoms of that disease. It will be interesting to see what she says!
Have a great day!

I just wanted to let you know that Lance had his ENT appt yesterday. His doctor said that the tonsils definately need to come out! But now we have another problem. The ENT wants Lance to see a pediatric neurologist in Pittsburgh or DC to see why his head is growing faster than his body. My mom and I know that Lance is not getting enough calories and think that is why his head my look bigger than his body. If he was in normal weight, then maybe we would not have this problem. But we have a game plan. My hubby and I have decided (with the permission of the ENT) to give Lance 1 teaspoon/tablespoon of protein with his last sippy cup of milk. It would be like 2 tablespoons Carnation Instant Breakfast to 1 tablespoon of protein. This is 100% whey protein. We are thinking that if we give it to him at night, then the extra calories will just sit there and maybe, just maybe he will start to gain alittle weight. We are starting this tonight. We will get a phone call sometime next week with a appt time with the pediatric neurologist. I will definately keep you up to date!

Hello All!
Lance seems to be doing better with eating since we have been giving him the extra protein. He is also sleeping better at night. I can't tell you how excited it makes me when his daycare says that he has eaten everything that he was given that day! He doesn't do that everyday, but it is getting better! Lance's appt with the Pedi Neurologist is July 20th. They did find a good one at UVA so we are going there. That is good for us cause it is closer than DC or Pittsburgh. I have mixed emotions knowing that this appt is set. I want to go and find out what is going on, but I am not prepared for the worst. I am slowing getting ready for anything.
My grandmother had a brain tumor on top of her spinal column and that blocked the spinal fluid from coming out. So you see, we have had 1 person in the family with a problem remotely like this. That makes me more nervous than you could ever imagine. I have just been praying and keeping my faith. I do that everynight. All things happen for a reason, I truly believe that!
