View Full Version : coblation vs CO2 Laser???

I was told I have chronic tonsillitis and that it would be a good Idea to have my tonsils removed. I have done some research on tonsillectomies on the least painful procedure for someone my age. I am in my 40's.

I have read where there is a procedure used with a CO2 Laser and a doctor in Huston Texas performs it. It is evidently done in his office with a local anesthetic and it only takes 15 to 20 minutes with very little pain afterwards. Most people resume work after 24-48 hours. The tonsillectomy leaves a little bit of the tonsil capsule on the throat muscle so that there is minimal pain after the surgery and no harm done to the throat muscles.

The other procedure is the Coblation tonsillectomy. General Anesthesia is used and it uses a low temperature laser like device with saline to remove the entire tonsil. My ENT told me I would be in pain for a good 2 weeks and that as an adult it is more painful than a child's tonsillectomy.

Has anyone had either of these two procedures and if so, would you choose the same procedure if you had to do it over again. What are your experiences with either of these 2 procedures?

Let me add my two cents. I'm also really interested in the lower-pain procedure. I may need my tonsils out and would MUCH rather be out for two days than two weeks. Is it just this guy in Houston or are there any in Los Angeles?

I have heard of that method where they leave part of the tonsil. I've also heard that could cause some problems down the road seeing as the entire tonsil was not removed.

I had a tonsillectomy done a week ago, the coblation method. I found mild pain for the first 7 days and some major pain for the first time last night and today. This is because my scabs are falling off, but apparently after a day of this I should experience a significant decrease in pain each day going foward.

I have been looking for other doctor's who do the CO2 method and found 1 in Indiana, but he is retiring so he isn't doing anymore.

My ENT said to plan on a lot of pain for 2 weeks because of my age if I choose the Coblation method.

I am looking at the cost of the hospital and anesthesia and pain compared to a plane ticket to Texas and minimal pain and a 15-20 minute in office tonsillectomy.

This is the website where I found the doctor in Houston.

www.[ REMOVED ].com

Does anyone know of him or had any surgeries by him? I have emailed this doctor and he did return my email and answer all of my questions.

I still have more questions, but I would really like to hear from others who have had this procedure done and how they are doing and if they would choose the same procedure again.

I called this Doctor's office and his receptionist told me that people fly in from all over the world to have him do their tonsillectomies and other procedures that need done.

Any opinions on this doctor???

I'm in Canada and if I ever needed tonsils removed, I think I would rather pay for expense of going to US for CO2 laser versus conventional method. I'd cut down on luxury item spending before compromising health expenses. Would like to know docs name as well or any closer to Ontario, Canada.
