my daughter is 8yrs old and she keeps getting migrain headaches with high fevers and then throws up everywhere. this has happened 3 times in the last 30 days. it has happened a few times before but not so close together. i have tried to think of things she is eating and activities she is doing but i cant think of anything out of the ordinary.
does anyone have any thoughts on what this might be. should i be concerned?

I think there can be many causes for migraines. I would certainly have her checked by a doctor to rule out anything serious.

tho the headaches and nausea sound normal for migrane the fever is not normally a symptom of actual classic type migranes.are her headaches ALWAYS one sided?has she been evaluated by her doc at all for this?if not,she really should.this could very well be something other than a migrane and really needs much further evaluation as to why this keeps happening.please let me know how things go.Marcia

You need to take her to her pediatrician NOW!!! Headaches and fevers with vomiting can be SERIOUS! My daughter had this when she was three and she had spinal meningitis. If your child has hit her head, she might have a brain injury but that would not explain the fever. Another thing to be worried about are brain tumors, which are very rare. Please take care and see your pediatrician! Good luck!

the ct was normal. her platlet count was a little high but that has nothing to do with headaches. she was in to the dr again yesterday for more blood work. this morning she is having another headache and wont eat. i bet around 4pm she will start throwing up as usual. the dr's dont seem to know and i am so concerned. they said her blood work would have shown lukemia or other things and it didnt so i dont know what to think. she has an appointment with the eye doctor next week and she has already seem an alergy specialist too. arggggggggg i am frustraited.

sorry to hear she is still dealing with these, thats gotta be tough for the both of you.

just a suggestion here, since CTs really do not get into the brain all that much and mostly will only show the more prominant and boney type of structures as this uses plain old x ray to form the pics?i would very highly reccomend an MRI with contrast in order to really get the best possible look at all of the structures within the brain, including the arteries(would pick up on any possible vascular malformations, such as AVMs or possible aneurysm)but this would really be able to either rule in or out any possible issues that could be going on within the brain itself.

a CT only gives you a very small part of the overall picture, trust me on that.another possible vascular malformation would be hemangioma?but this is fed veinously not arteriorly so if one was indeed in the brain, this would not actually show up(or 'light up") with the contrast like the arterial malformations would, but it would be picked up just with the MRI.I actually had/have one of these little suckers sitting within my spinal cord.these can show up in the brain and the spinal cord.just one possibility of something that could be lurking but would not show up on a CT.a ct is great to check for old bleeds going on but would not show any malformations that had not bleed yet.

I just think that considering your daughters types of symptoms, your childs doc would have ordered something that would have truely given the overall pic of the brain like an MRI vs a CT which when trying to actually "look" for a problem is just woefully inadequate to fully explore all the structures, down to and thru all soft tissue ones within the brain.you just need to really get the full picture before completely ruling out a possible issue going on within the brain.you NEED to be sure or something could be missed that with time, could really become much more complicated.

there are just so many possiblities there that need to be fully explored, and ruled out before saying the brain is really actually "cleared".do you know what I mean?this doc is doing you and your daughter no actual favors by just skimming the surface of a very complicated organ.I would really tell her doc that you would prefer that along with the other testing they are continuing to do(that IS wonderful)you would really feel a whole lot better if they really fully explored her brain with a contrasted MRI.

this IS your daughter after all,not his,and he is not the one who is having to watch your daughter suffer thru all of this.if he balks at the idea, ask him if he can honestly say there is nothing wrong going on within your daughters brain, just based on the results of only a CT that barely touches on the entire structures of her brain.there is just no way he could possibly say that he feels confident in stating that everything is just "fine" there.if he does,he is lying to your face.

this just really DOES need to be done, period.with a contrasted MRI,you have ruled out alot of possible issues that could be causing your daughters symptoms,or possibly actually find the problem.but either way at least you would know for sure,or with pretty good certainty(as no actual test is ever 100% accurate, there are always variables there)that there is either something to deal with or absolutely nothing and be able to move on to other possibilitys.if this were one of my sons,I would be definitely asking their docs for this test.really.you just have to cover all your bases when it comes to trying to Dx any medical problem and this MRI,in your daughters case, would be doing just that.as I always say, better safe than sorry.

I do hope they can find and fix the problem,it is just soo very hard to watch our children suffer with any sort of medical problem.please keep me posted.good luck, and demand that contrasted MRI.Marcia
