Maybe you did'nt see it , or did'nt understand it .. so here goes a whole thread! :bouncing:
You once said me that intelligence works against us if we have OCD. Exactly what did you mean by this? , you meant to say that intelligence tells us what is right, in few cases? and if we have OCD then that 'possible real' thing keeps on repeating in our mind.. I mean .. while being obsessed by something unreal , we May think something totally real .. then don't you think that ignoring other 'real' stuff will be a stupid thing..
Just post some comment about it ( or anyone else ) .. this thing has stuck in my mind!
Bye

Hey Skip
Nah sorry man, I didnt see your question before. What I meant by intelligence working against us in OCD is that being smart or intelligent we tend to explore every possible thing we can think of (and we can think of a lot, because we ARE smart) in our heads, and end up exhausting ourselves and getting worried. I found studying Biology/Psychology at college played havoc with my OCD because I knew a lot about things that could go wrong with the body. Every little twinge I had, I would think it was cancer. Everytime I thought I heard something or saw something weird I thought I was schizophrenic and having psychotic halluncinations. We think of something, and our intelligence and what we know blows it out of all proportion. This is why we question ourselves so much with OCD.
This is where the problem comes in with obsessive compulsives... they tend to be highly intelligent and sensitive to the world by nature, and therefore worry about everything that crosses their minds. If you were a general dumbarse, you wouldnt worry about half these things, if you know what I mean. And if you were dumb, you probably wouldnt have OCD at all.

yeah my therapist told me today that alot of intelligent people get ocd, because we overthink everything, it makes perfect sense! Gosh, who woulda thunk that our genius would turn around and bite up in the bud? haha i know ive been gettin worried about the silliest things.. like if my mom is gone too long from the house i start thinking crazy thoughts about what if she got in an accident.. not all the time reluctantly and soon shes going on a few day vacation.. im preparing now:P ill try not to call her all the time

yea this happend to me too.. I considered even the smallest thing possible as a cancer & all that. I kept on thinking about it at like 4:00pm , strongly scared. And all of it looked 100% right , and from everything i thought and everything i found out , it was comfirmed ( by me ) that i had a problem but somewhere i knew that this is wrong, and if i'll leave it , nothing would happen. Thou its gone , and now i care a damn about those medical stuff. Moved to religious stuff thou! ..
And about that 'intelligence can be right' part , i'll rather stop thinking about anything that comes in my mind , maybe good for me!

Hi There,
Although my intelligence worked against me in the beginning with my OCD, I have found ways to utilize my intelligence to combat OCD, and I currently am doing so much better and not taking anymore meds. An intelligent person will live to learn with the uncertainties that plague we OCD sufferers. It's about learning to cognitively face your OCD fears and accept the possibility that they may happen. Soon, the anxiety lessens and the thoughts pass quickly so you can lead a more liberated life free of OCD obsessions. I think that a truly intelligent person realizes that nothing in life is for certain; a less intelligent person tries to achieve this certainty that does not exist.

i suggested the same thing to somewhere else here ..this is an old game i keep on playing but i mess with other situations too where i'am overcome with 'guilt' for not doing a behavior due to something i consider inappropriate. Anyway , my best shot is to ignore , whatever happens .. and i've mentioned this same dialog lots of time on this site , i guess!

It is theorized that the reason why the vast majority of obsessive-compulsives are highly intelligent is because of the neurobiology behind OCD. Certain parts of our brain, most notably the basal ganglia and orbitofrontal cortex, actually work overtime, as witnessed by overactivity in PET scans. Also, we have less white matter (myelin and connective fibers) to gray matter (neurons), so we simply think too much. It's thought that our brains don't undergo the "pruning" process that normally occurs during adolescence, where a person's brain gets rid of the extraneous neurons (we're born with excess neurons) and hones the connective white matter.

Yes, it does. That's why I don't feel ashamed that I have OCD and Asperger's. My brain is different, that's the way God made me, and I wouldn't change it for the world...

lack of mylin is'nt a very good stuff.. layers of mylin fades away in alzheimer disease.
Stevo , you check out my replies again , i have a question for you there :)

The major reason that Alzheimer's occurs is because of amyloid beta plaques inside the brain and deterioration of brain tissue. We were simply born without the proper amounts of aforementioned brain tissue to begin with.

sorry the disease i was talking about was actually Multiple Scelerosis. heres a pick up from somewhere:
'Anatomy:
Normally, most nerves in the body are insulated by a protective sheath of fatty substance called myelin. Multiple sclerosis causes demyelination, in which this protective sheath becomes inflamed and ultimately destroyed. MS can cause loss of muscular coordination, impaired vision, and incontinence.'
( hope thats not breaks those 'other sites' rules )
When i was obsessive-compulsive about my medical condition i went through all this. Consider myself from having cancer to alzhimer and MS. At the same time i came to knew that i also have OCD , but i was'nt sure about that. But if i would have known at that time OCD and MS has this Myelin stuff issue , then i would have collided my head against my monitor or something. Now the condition is'nt that at at all lol :D
and yes , lack of mylin or lazy mylin ( one which dose'nt works ) is a strong cause of Diabetes ( sugar ). So we are special in one of those dangerous ways :p

Still, you don't have to worry- the lack of myelin in MS is a lack of myelin on sensory nerves. Our deficient myelin to gray matter ratio is only in our brain. The reason all of that horrible stuff happens in MS is because the myelin, which makes the electrical messages from the brain send faster, deteriorates, and the symptoms occur because of the lack of efficiency. With us, the lack of myelin deals with connections between information in our brain and the access of it. As for diabetes mellitus, I've never heard of myelin being a cause. It's almost entirely the inability of the pancreas to produce insulin to lower blood glucose levels. Sometimes it's an autoimmune disease as in type I, juvenile diabetes, where the beta cells of the Islets of Langerhans are destroyed and can't make insulin. In type II, the more common of the two, the pancreas just can't regulate blood glucose levels. The pancreas, being an endocrine gland, is responsible for its secretions without messages from the brain, one of the few organs that can do something without feedback from the brain. When glucose levels are up, the pancreas responds without receiving something from the brain- it is the one to send a response to the brain.

Gray matter stuff , all OCD peoples are hyperactive and curious??

We're not hyperactive in the sense that we have ADHD, even though ADHD can occur simultaneously with OCD (OCD and ADHD are now starting to be considered autistic spectrum disorders), but every OCD-er's brain is hyperactive in the areas I mentioned. The inquisitiveness also stems from the extra gray matter.
