View Full Version : Lots of blood..and a trip to the doc

Hi all.

I haven't been posting for the past few days because I have been busy with docs appts, etc., here's the scoop. I know I might be being paranoid, but I also feel I know my body and mainly just want to vent.

I had my total colectomy on 3/27. I had a scope again on 4/16 when I had a partial obstruction. I haven't had another f/u regarding scope since. I can't get a colonscopy because of my total colectomy, I only have about 15 cm of rectum they need to worry about, so here's my concerns. My surgeon told me to come back at the end of June or August for a f/u scope or sooner if I had problems. I have been experiencing an increasing worse pressure in my rectum, sometimes when voiding sometimes I don't have to be voiding, it feels like someone is stretching out my rectum from the inside basically, it's a little painful. I have had bloating, frequent bowel movements, etc., as to be expected post operatively with my type of surgery. I have seen what appear to be bloodly fragments of tissue-not the paper type either-in my excretments. I tell my doc this Tuesday, he says, well you have all the symptoms of colon ca, but it's too soon for it to be back. He wouldn't do the procto-scope on me in the office. Another reason I am concerning, my H&H were low prior to surgery because of my polyp bleeding I became anemic. After surgery my levels all remained normal, prior to chemo and just over the past three weeks, I've had shortness of breath a bit upon excetion, but I thought I was just out of shape-again I had this prior to surgery because of blood loss. Prior to chemo they did some bloodwork, my levels were down again, so this is why it worries me that it might be back. I know it's soon, but I think I have a right to be paranoid considering that my mother, her brother, her sister, and father all died of this disease.
I go to the bathroom tonight and about a teaspoon of blood comes out, my stomach has been bothering me all day, and when I wipe, I get about as much if not a tablespoon after wiping several times with the toliet paper. I am going to see my geneticist tomorrow and I am going to call my regular GI doc that's near me here to see what I can do.
I had well to moderately differentiated cancer when I was diagnosed, I know that is good parameters in terms of pathology and it's not considered agressive, HOWEVER, I have also done research on HNPCC and have seen more than one study state that people with HNPCC, even though pathology states well, moderately, or poor, the cancers seem to multiple faster than those of the general colon cancer diagnosis.

I am worried, and paranoid I know but I think I have a right to be and I just wanted to vent. Thanks for listening.

You have cause to be concerned however don't panic, you need your wits about you. You are doing the right thing in getting in to see the docs about this. Be firm with the GI about wanting the source of the blood identified. It could be leaking post-op but that should have healed by now. It also could be the scar tissue constricting and causing trouble. CancerDad would be better able to comment on that.

Hi Christy

Sorry you're having so much trouble. There could be non-cancer reasons for your current woes. An ulcer could be causing bleeding and stomach problems. This can be checked for with an upper endoscopy. An upper endoscopy would also show if there are any polyps in the small intestine that could be bleeding, causing anemia. You could also have developed internal hemmorhoids - that should show on a proctoscope exam.

Christy,

First of all, let me say again that my thoughts are with you. I can't imagine how difficult it is to go through this without your parents and sister. You have every right to be "paranoid" and any doctor that doesn't take you super seriously should be dismissed from your case. I think you are right to press them. They should be able to do a protoscope right there in the office...that would at least let them see what is not too far up.

Try to keep your mind busy...get a good summer read out and get to the beach...then whip your docs into shape. :)

This is so hard...it is a tough road with way too many ups and downs. I am thinking of you, rooting for you, and hoping that they can find out whatever this is to give you some peace.

Take care,
Cats

Well I went to see my surgeon, who just operated on my father for cc on Saturday. I told him about the blood I passed earlier in the week and he said he didn't know what it could be from, possibly surgery or something maybe. He told me to follow up with my GI doc if it continued, today I've got abd bloating and a chronic pain on my right lower side off and on, to the point it hurts to sit. I am going to call my GI doc tomorrow, I am returning to work this week too, actually I did on Friday.

My boss has been so wonderful through all of this, he told me on my chemo days I could work from home if I wanted to.

I have decided to continue with chemo, I will try to tough it out and talk with my doc about the wicked side affects on Tuesday too.

Thanks for all your support you guys.
