Hi, I am a 20 year old female and lately I have been experiencing severe pain in my upper abdominal region. The last time it occured was Saturday night ( 8-31 )! I was in so much pain I could barely move. It felt like someone had stuck a knife in me and was twisting.I tried curling up in the fetal position, even stretching out but, nothing helped. I didn't feel sick to my stomach or anything. The pain lasted for about 20 to 30 minutes. Can anyone help me figure out what could be the problem? I really appreciate your help.

If the pain is upper right , like under yur ribs and radiating to yur back shoulder blades, it could be your gallbladder. But a couple monthes ago, something similar happened to me, I had incredible pain in my upper abdomen, like someone was stabbing me iwth a knife to! The dr contributed it to cramps...yeah it sounds weird i know. But u can try to take an advil or something if its muscular, to relax yur stomach, perhaps it will help. Also you could possibly have a sensitive gut, I have found i have that, certain foods cause some discomforting cramping in my stomach which may be attributed to Irritable Bowel, but my GI dr is still looking int oit. So anyway, be careful of fruit on an empty stomach, eccesive greasy foods, carbonated drinks, and dairy. also-if it is that bad again try the ER. Good luck and let us know what happens.

I have experienced the same pain you felt! When you had that pain, were you unable to walk well or at all? I could not. I do have pain in my upper abdominal area, near my sternum. The gastroenterologist said it wasn't gallstones because they didn't show up in the ultrasound. Maybe you should get an ultrasound done.
