View Full Version : Symptoms consistent with Colon Cancer/ Polyp + family history

Almost two years ago, I felt a sharp pain as I went #2 and saw blood in the stool (as in, a part of it).

The blood continuted and off for the next six months, I told my parents about it and even showed them it and they said it was nothing. During a physical I told my doctor about it and she saiid it was a fissure, which made sense cosidering the sharp pain. It hasn't occured since until today (I'm 16 now).

The last two days I've had pain in my lower left abdomen and just now noticed blood in my #2's.

Yes, I could ask my parents to take me to the doctor, but...

1) My dad is already fighting colorectal cancer as it is.

2) THey both have labeled me as a neurotic hypochondriac, despite that these symptoms are concerning.

Are these symptoms serious enough to ask to see a doctor, especially with a family history of Colon Cancer?

Hi Earl,

Please schedule an appointment to have a colonoscopy ASAP, and don't allow others to talk you out of it. Maybe it is hemmroids, but who's to say without having a colonoscopy. Make sure you tell the GI specialist about your family history of CC, and that your father currently has cc.

Good luck, and keep the boards posted

I agree with the previous poster. Cancer is not prejudice, it doesn't care what age you are, I am 29, my mom passed from colon cancer 8 years ago, her father, her sister and brother also passed from the condition, and her older sister had to have surgery for it, but is still living. I am telling you this, not to scare you, but to explain my family history. I have been tested for genetic colon cancer, there are two types FAP, which means you have a ton of polyps throughout your entire colon and HNPCC-hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer, which is the one I have. My geneticist told me you can be a carrier and never develop cancer, for people that have it genetic wise, it is a 50% chance of passing it onto offspring, typically they use a criteria called the Amterdam critieria to categorize people who have a family history of this.

Just because your father has it, which I am sorry to hear, does not mean you have colon cancer with whats going on either, it could be hemorroids. Age is definitely on your side. However, no disrespect to your parents, but blood in the stool is not abnormal.

Some people have been diagnosed with colon ca as young as 21. I emplore you to tell your parents that you need a GI consult. You need a colonscopy to be for sure to find out what's going on. I started getting screened at 18 because of my mom's history. Blood in the stool can be from a number of reasons, ulcers, stomach problems, etc., but I would advise you to follow up and get a GI consult ASAP.

Do keep us posted on what happens, Good luck and try not to worry, I know easier said than done.
