My DS is only 3 months old but weighs 18 pounds. His rear facing car seat only goes to 22 pounds. What do I do now?

RVH-
When you go into a store or something since you don't use the infant seat, do you carry your baby or does he sit up in a cart or stroller? Just wondering.

I was able to find a carseat/carrier that held up to 35 pounds. I think it was an evenflo Opus 35. DS was okay weightwise, but was getting too long for his regular carseat and it was the middle of winter and I didn't want to have to get him a snow suit, too. We used the carseat carrier and a nano bag and hat all winter long.

Otherwise, I suppose you'll have to get a convertible carseat. One that can face backwards for the first year and then you turn it around when your child is past one year old.

Just want to add past one year old *and* 20 lbs.

Oh, he is 3 months and already 18 pounds, hence why we have this problem!

All of the major car seat maunfacturers make convertible car seats that go from 5-40 lbs and can be rear facing until one year (and 20 lbs, as some babies are not 20 lbs at 1 year and it is suggested that they stay rear facing until they hit that mark, but I, like you had a little tubby on my hands...lol)
After one year (in your case) you can turn the car seat around to be front facing. These seats do have 5 point harnesses with adjustable heights.
Look around and find a good one though, because I found that the first one I bought didnt give ds enough leg room by the time he was 8-9 mos old, but he had to stay rear facing.
Good luck hun

I just checked the old car seat -- it was a cosco brand opus 35. It was wonderful. Was sad to see it go when DS was old enough and big enough to move to the next step up -- I got him an evenflo triumph convertible car seat -- like a big fluffy recliner. Good for 40" and 40 pounds and can also be used for infants, turned around.

I have to add that my DD hated her infant seat - we went with the COMBI - OH MY GOSH is it great - I have a fat kid and she has so much room!! its still an infant seat - but with a ton of room and breatheable fabric - a GOD send!!! she never sweats now and loves to ride in the car - I will never get the other fabric again - we had the peg perego and now they just came out with the fabric of the COMBI - and made them more roomy too - we were just unlucky to get the last of the bad pegs!! Anywho... just my little input.

My ds had no issues with the weight restriction on his infant carrier but was too long for it by 6.5 months. We'd planned a long car trip for dh's work and bought a convertible 5-80lb one before we left. It was great although he did slouch down and look uncomfortable for awhile. It was rear facing to 1 year and 22 pounds but ds didn't hit 22 pounds till he was well over 18 months...closer to 2. By 18 months we got tired of having him upset about what he couldn't see and turned him around and all was well. The car seat we got was the Alpha-Omega Cosco one but I'm not sure it is available everywhere...we live in Ontario.

I'm in the same boat. DD will soon be outgrowing her bucket seat, even though she's only 3 months old. We'll be going with a convertable seat too. I wish we had just done that from the start. The travel system was good in theory, but I didn't push her around in the car seat much, and now it seems like it was a waste of money (even though it was gift, so I guess I shouldn't complain..lol).

She also HATES the seat. She screams when I put her in it, so I'm hoping one of the bigger, more comfortable convertable seats will be more comfy for her. I hear good things about the britax seat, so we'll probably look at that.

3 women in our play class today recommended this one. They all have 4 month olds and love this seat!!
