I haven't heard anything about alcohol, but i've heard that antibotics make birth control not work. Is that true?

Yes, antibiotics + St Johns Wort make it less effective and liver enzyme inducers such as some anticonvulsants,eg carbomazepine, oxcarbazepine, topiramate, phenytoin, phenobarbital. Antiretroviral HIV medication, nelfinavir, nevirapine, oxcarbazepine. TB medication, especially rifabutin and rifampicin. Also griseofulvin antifungal and modafinil central nervous system stimulant.

Quite a list. But your Dr should find out if you are taking any of these before
prescribing birth control.

Alcohol in itself would not make it less effective unless it caused diarrhoea or vomiting.

Personally I would steer clear of any herbal preparation that claims to affect female hormones, as these have not all been widely regulated in the UK and may have an interaction.

Yeah that is quite a list. Thanks though. Those medicines you named are only drugs you can get through your doctor though, right?

There's nothing out there that you can buy from a drug store that could effect birth control?

Also... how about green tea? I drink it religiously... hope it doesn't effect my pills... just worried cause I know tea is a herb...

Supposedly the more fat you have on your body the less effective it is also.

Green tea should be fine. Yes, except for St John's Wort they have to be prescribed and the Dr should take your medical history so would know if you are taking anything that induces hepatic enzymes.

You can buy some herbal preparations such as Agnus Castus over the counter but I would advise you to avoid ones that claim to balance or in any way affect female hormones. There is no licensing for these in the UK and sometimes they put several together in a preparation so there is no way of knowing what affect it would have. St Johns Wort is the one they know for sure.

Yes, Jasmine for the combined pill the body mass index is best below 30. It also increases the risk of thrombosis. Otherwise you could choose something that isn't weight related such as the Depo injection.

Should medications such as Paxil effect bc? I've been taking that for about two months now and the bc for about 2 years. I know antibiotics for sure lessen its effectiveness, but what about antidepressants/anxiety medications or over the counter ones? Pain relievers? Help!

No everything else is okay. Read the leaflets that come with you medication or ask the pharmacist if you are not sure.

They say antibiotics make it less effective but I have never had any problems with that. I have never used a second form of protection while on them. But that is just me so don't go trying it!!! I have heard St. John's Wort will make them less effective too. As for alcohol I have never heard of that!

i got pregnant while on birthcontrol. i had been on birth control for about a year and never used any back up method. i got bitten by a kitten (don't ask :) ), it got infected, and i had a shot of antibotics. i knew about the effects on birthcontrol, but not taking any thing by mouth, it never crossed my mind, so we did not use a back-up method.
well now he is 4 and beautiful. although he was unplanned, i wouldn't trade him for anything in the world. just be careful with antibotics, because i am here to tell you, it can happen. :)

I hear so many things about antibiotics. I was taking Doryx for my acne and then I started Loestrin 24. About a week after starting the Loestrin I had an appt. at my derm and I expressed my concerns to her. She prescribled me Solodyn and she said that she takes bc herself and said it makes the bcp's 98% effective as opposed to 99%. She assured me it was ok (and she's a very reputable derm)! Anyway, when picking up my prescription at CVS the pharmacist told me that the Solodyn would decrease the bcp-and I told him what my dr. said (the whole 98% thing) and he was like "ummmm I think it's a lot less than that". So who knows, I'm always parnoid so I'm going to use the Solodyn as a last resort. But it's wacky how there are so many conflicting thoughts on it!

After this whole thing I talked to my cousin who has been on bc for a while. Last year she had her wisdom teeth taken out and asked the surgeon about her antibiotics. The surgeon, although he did say to use another form of protection while taking the anti's, also mentioned that nothing has really been proven about decreasing the effectiveness. Is that true?

i don't know of any studies, but it happened to me, so i know there is some truth in it.
