I was wondering what happens when you have a crown placed on a molar tooth....do you just have them replaced as the crown goes or do you eventually lose your tooth over time ...very worried need two crowns for
old large fillings....Just looking for advice

Yes and no. Crowns are usually good for many, many years, however, sometimes a cavity will develop at the bottom edge of the crown on the tooth requiring the crown to be replaced and tooth ground down more. Even when the tooth is ground down a lot they can put a pin in the tooth to help hold a new crown.

Some of my molar crowns are 45 years old and have not been replaced.

Sometimes a tooth will have decay under the crown, but, they can drill thru the crown in order to do a root canal or fill the cavity. Amazing what they can do these days.

There is a possibility the tooth will have problems requiring removal, however, this is usually determined at the time a crown is being discussed.

Can I ask you what kind of crowns those are porcelain fused to metal?

I have gold crowns and also porcelain crown on a post. I have no idea how porcelain crowns are made.

When you have a crown done it should last for many,many years. At your regular check=ups your dentist and hygienist will always check the margins of your crown to make sure it is sealed properly and x-rays annually will ensure that there is no decay under the crown. If you are having a molar done it will probably be a porcelin-fused to metal crown. If it is a front tooth then it can be an all ceramic crown. Crowns are really the only way to go when you have very large fillings that need to be replaced.
