I had a Nissen fundoplication and hernia repair done 2 years ago. Wonderful no heartburn. Then I started having trouble swallowing not choking but the liquid and food would not go down just stayed in the esophagus until I could bring it up. It never reached the stomach and I had a little bit of heartburn other than that no pain. After some tests the Dr took me to surgery and was on the table for 4 hours. My hernia did not come undone but my stomach slid through the hernia repair and was laying on my lung. (the 2 surgens said they have never come across anything like it) Now a year later I am having the swallowing problem again, this is not all the time but alot of the time. I had a upper GI and was told that I have a small hernia (Dr said he cannot see how) and esophageal spasms. The Dr is going to do a endo to look at things. I just had a colonscopy done and he could not go up all the way because of spasms. (he told me he thought that I might have adheasions from the nission fundo) It is 3am and I cannot sleep for all the worry of this. Anybody have any input?

Hi there. So sorry to hear of your troubles. I had fundo & hernia repair done in June '01, but have not had the difficulties you're dealing with. Hang in there - I've heard that scar tissue can cause adhesions around the surgery site, making it difficult to swallow. I'm sure it's also possible to have another hernia somewhere else in the abdomen too, which can cause the problems you're having.

Keep going to your doc or find another for a 2nd opinion to get the relief you need.

Good luck and keep us posted,
Katie G
