I am a 15 year old girl who has had pin worms for about a year and a half now. The first time I had them my entire stool was completely covered with these moving white worms. Since then, I have had five more recurring cases of them. I'm guessing they just never went away after the very first infection. The first time I had them, the doctor just called in a prescription for Vermox for me to take. I took both doses. The other times we have purchased an ineffective over-the-counter medication called Reese's Pin Worm Medication. I have been a vegetarian for five years, so I am wondering if this could have played a factor in me getting them. The first time I had them, I was able to see them in my vagina. Today, I noticed some crawling around in my pubic hair. I have started eating meat again, as of November. I have been taking black walnut pills, garlic pills, and potent acidopholous for four days now. We have also been washing my sheets daily. Can anyone please tell me what to do? Also, I have been begging my mom to not take me to the doctor, as I am afraid they will make me pull down my pants and look in that area. Can anyone please tell me what to expect when i go to the doctor tomorrow, ie. What questions/ possible procedures could take place. I would appreciate any responses before I go tomorrow afternoon. Thank you so much in advance for your help.

Ann,

You poor dear..am so glad to hear you will be seen by a doctor soon. Don't be embarrassed!

Sounds like those pin worms may not be pin worms at all. Am hoping doc asked you to bring a stool sample to the office so that it (pin worm) can be investigated. Once known, your doctor will order a really strong medicine to get rid of your problem once and for all.

Make sure you follow up with the doctor regularly until your problem is resolved for good.

Oh, and if you can do it...notify your high school nurse. Nurse will keep everything confidential..not to worry.

I know the thought is not pleasant and please don't feel guilty, but it could be that someone else at your school now has them or maybe you even recontracted them there.

Anyhoo, ask your doctor today if he/she thinks it's a good idea to notify the school nurse. Also ask how best to disinfect at home.

Please let me know how things go at the doctor today. Take care and good luck.

Thank you for your response. I know that they're pin worms, as my mom reads up on these things, and I have read so many things on the Internet, that they certainly have to be pin worms, but do you think it's possible that I have some other kind of worm in me, as well? I am so scared...My mom is waiting for a call back from the doctor at the moment. I'll check abck later. Thanks!

I do think it's possible that it could be something other than pinworms.

It is vital that your Mom takes you to a doctor for investigation.

I think it's criminal that your doctor treats you (prescribes medication) over the telephone without a thorough physical examination first!

I know this sounds harsh, but it is shameful that you have had to suffer with this condition for over 1.5 years...your mother should insist that you see a doctor immediately. Ova or parasites are nothing to fool around with..if it is pinworm you are obviously reinfecting yourself. Doc needs to explain the lifecycle of the organism to you and the facts surrounding intestinal infestation...including but not limited to the handling of your own wastes, etc.

I'm sorry but I can't fathom how your mother and your doctor are handling this situation...

My mother has called the doctor many times before. Today the doctor just prescribed me medicine over the phone. My mom has also bought me various herbs and is doing alot to help me. We just thought back to about 1.5 years ago when we were in Mexico. My parents had bought me various fruits and vegetables at the market, and we now believe that to be the cause of the worms. My parents have many health books at home and we have read them to understand the life cycle, et cetera of the pin worms. I trust that the doctor knows what they're doing, and we'll see how it turns out this time, I suppose.

P.S. Are you a doctor? I'm just curious.

i agree with iley...has the doctor checked the worm for a definite diagnosis? the fact you were in mexico makes me feel they are not pin worms and especially if the treatment didnt work...the other thing is if you didnt take the medicine for the exact amount of time as prescribed then you dont kill the worm off and they reinfest......good luck

I had pin worms once. I called the doctor and told her what was going on. She called in a script for meds for me. A few weeks later the worms were back and she wanted to see a stool sample. Definitely was pin worms.

This second time, my kids were put on the meds and I also wormed my cat. The worms never came back.

I never knew where the worms came from, but since my cat liked sleeping on my pillow, I assume they came from him.

Has anyone else in your family had pinworms? Do you have any pets that could be reinfecting you?

OK, this may be a little late but to anyone else reding this with the same problem it could be beneficial. YOu have to understand the life-cycle of the worm, and that their eggs can get everywhere, even to floating around in the air, and then being swallowed. The life cycle has to be broken by being meticulously clean for a couple of weeks, AND by making sure everyone you live with is also treated at the same time, just in case they get a few and re-infect you.
