View Full Version : CEA Level 1.6 But Nobody Bothered To Tell Me

I went to get my 3rd round of FolFox yesterday but my white blood count was screwed up so I did not get it. Go again next Tue. the 27th. I saw my oncologist on Friday June 16th. I asked him about CT scans and he said "wait a year". He would do CEA testing to keep an eye on my progress.

What I did not know, and nobody bothered to tell me, was that on my initial visit to the oncologist on May 15th, blood was drawn and a CEA test was done, but nobody told me the test was going to be done, nobody told me the results of it. Yesterday I started questioning the onc nurse about my blood. She said "I see that a CEA level test was done on you on May 15th. It was 1.6 and that is good. Anything below 2.2 is good." So that did make me feel a lot better. However,
I am so frustrated.... why didn't my onc doctor tell me this when I sat right there in front of him asking him about scans and blood tests. He only comes to this cancer clinic twice a month. The nurses are in constant contact with him, but they sort of run the clinic. They talked to him yesterday while I was there because I asked if there was a shot I could get to help my white count. They said "he wanted it to come on up naturally". ... My frustration is partly with myself too for not knowing the right questions to ask. I was hoping to get all this FolFox stuff behind me before cold weather sets in because I have to go outside a lot (I live on a farm). And touching cold stuff isn't very pleasant to say the least. Thanks for letting me ramble....

You can ramble ANYTIME!!! Unfortunately, many times you have to know what to ask, or you won't get the answer. Now you know that every 3 months you should ask for your CEA value. You also have a right to ask for copies of ANY results. Don't be afraid to ask. Then you can take them home, look them over carefully and you can always call in to have your nurse ask you oncologist any questions you have. Also, you can have a copy of all your data in case you need to make a visit to the Emergency Room at some point.

Good Luck,
