Hi ladies!
My DD is starting the teething process. She is only 12 weeks old but has just about EVERY sign and symptom. She has her good days and her bad days but today is horrible!! I've given her baby tylenol and its not even touching the pain. She has been crying and screaming for most of the day. Her mouth hurts so much she hasnt eaten properly either. I know she is hungry but when i put her on she sucks for a few seconds then pulls back and starts crying, then puts herself back on and tries to suck while crying and whimpering. She does this for about 3 times before just giving up on eating and then screaming. I feel so bad for her. I've tried massaging her gums, cold teething ring. Orajel is hard to get in her mouth (esp when shes screaming!LOL). I dont do orajel too often because it mostly just gets on her tongue and lips. I'm so frustrated because theres not much i can do for her. Right now shes in her swing with the blowdryer next to her because thats the only way she will be quiet at least for a little while. I hate doing that to her but I am on the verge of pulling my freaking hair out:dizzy: (not a good idea with PP hairloss!LOL). I dont know what to do and just need a little advice. has ne one elses little ones been through this? I cant just take her to the doctor because we dont have insurance right now (didnt qualify for medicaid). Her new insurance starts on july 1st. If things dont improve i will take her to the reduced cost clinic tomorrow. Im just worried, esp cause shes not eating much at all. And shes always a little piglet so im sure shes very hungry.

Sorry for the loooooong post. I just also needed to vent a little. DH feels so bad for me he is in there making a cake! Go figure!
Tia for any advice or kind words

OMG...I am so sorry! Have you tried maybe a frozen washcloth to numb and soothe the gums before feeding. My DS is starting to teeth...chewing on everything, drooling and such but nothing breaking through the skin yet. Sorry I amnot more hel, but this might work?

I would def go to a clinic, because it might be something else like an ear infection. I know how hard it is to see them in pain listen to them wail though! Poor thing...and by that I mean her and you ;) Good luck!

Hi just a thought, but is she maybe getting frustrated at not being able to get any milk?

I say that as I have heard that sometimes babys can lose the reflux action of sucking, leading them to frustration of not being able to get a feed!

Would that be a possibility?

Have you tried teething tablets or baby tylenol?

I find the baby Tylenol doesn't work worth a you know what!!! Try the advil or stronger pain relief. The tylenol doesn't have an anti-inflammatory agent in it so it doesn't work.
You poor thing. It's so hard to watch our little one's suffer isn't it.... Usually bouts of discomfort to this extent only last for a few hours. The pain will lessen and things will get better again soon.
Like I said, try a better pain reliever, for her sake and yours!

That sounds like reflux to me. DD has reflux and does exactly what you just said - not latching, screaming in pain, arching her back, pulling off, whimpering, etc. She ends up so worked up that she doesn't get a good feed, which leads her to screaming from hunger. I find the ONLY way to calm her down is to give her a bottle of EBM in an upright position to ease up on the hunger, then put her to the breast.

I actually forgot to get her script refilled and she's been without yesterday and today, and tonight she was doing exactly what you said. I finally took her in the tub with me to calm down so she could nurse standing up in a complete upright position (only way to do that is in the deep jacuzi tub).

Here a few things to try, and if your baby seems to do better then it might be reflux, not teething...

* Try to nurse in an inclined position so the head is above the rest of the body.

* Burp FREQUENTLY. More then you usually would. Even if she doesn't burp, it helps just to sit upright for a minute, let everything settle, then go back to feeding.

* Encourage small frequent meals. By feeding closer together you won't be trying to burp a frantically hungry baby. Plus, less stomach contents means less reflux. I feed DD every hour, but, if I were to encourage more time between feedings she would be SO uncomfortable afterwards.

* Hold the baby in an upright position for 20-30 minutes afterwards. Don't lay flat after a feed.

Keep in mind your baby doesn't need to throw up to have reflux. Also, the oral stage (drooling, chewing on their fingers, etc) starts up right about now, as does reflux. I would try to rule out reflux if you haven't already suspected it.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Well she has calmed down ALOT since I posted this. Shes doing better. Can babies her age have advil or motrin? I only ask cuz my SIL said she cant have ne thing else until six months. North I havent really thought about the reflux, but it sure could be a possibility. Shes done good with her feedings tonight and has seemed normal again. I will do what you suggested and see if that helps. Also, unfortunately she wont take a bottle, still working on that;) . how do they do tests to find out if they have reflux?
Thank you all for your support. I really needed it today. I just felt so bad for my poor baby. I hope tomorrow will be a better day!

If you can't afford a trip to the doc...go ask a pharmacist. They'll be in the know about babies, doses etc. for things other than Tylenol. I also suggest teething tablets. Most are all natural and seem to work very well for a lot of little ones. DS daycare swears by them.

But keep your eye out for an ear infection. There were two times with my first when I couldn't figure out what in the world was wrong with him and why he was so cranky. Took him to the doc...ear infection! Watch for batting at the ears or pulling away or crying when you gently pull on the ear (like a doc would do before they put that ear lookie thing in there) :)

Teething stinks...and it seems to go on forever.

Im not sure she has an ear infection. She didnt seem to care when i was pulling on her ears. This teething already sux and it just started!! We can feel a SMALL bump on the top of her gums. I hope it comes through soon, for everyones sake. Im going to wait and see how she does today and if it starts up again i will take her into the clinic. I cant wait to get her insurance back and not have to worry about taking her to the doctors. She was on my insurance but it stopped when I quit my job, so now we had to wait for this other one's coverage to start. July 1st cant come quick enough!!
About the teething tabs, is there a certain brand i should get? I forgot that i have seen them at walgreensbefore. Maybe I should swing by and get some. Thaks for reminding me!!
