if all i have to do to lose weight is consume LESS calories than i need, let say i need 2000 calories a day, so I will eat 1500 calories a day to lose weight. does it matter where those calories come from? can i eat 1500 calories worth of chips, cookies and butter and still lose weight because i consume less than i need? That way, i can enjoy what i eat and still lose weight! right?

Technically that is correct. but if you are eating mainly foods like that it will be bad for your overall health and you will probably be very hungry as foods like that tend to not fill you up very well.

Granted, if weight is the ONLY thing you're concerned with, then the 1500 calorie "chips and cookies" diet will work. However, you will likely struggle with strong sugar cravings, and constant hunger. Even as you lose the weight, you may find that your hunger level remains the same or even gets worse. Everything in your body suffers from the lack of nutrients and it will age your body faster.
On the other hand........eat 1500 calories worth of healthy, whole-foods and your body will reward you with far more than just a slimmer figure. :) You also get: more energy, an overall feeling of well-being, better skin, hair and nails, fewer colds, fewer cravings, a decreased appetite, and even look younger when you're older.
