Could I get a disabled plate for my vehicle with this back injury ?
Some days I find it real hard to have to walk. How do you go about getting them ?

Thank you for your help.

Hi, Shawley.

Ask your doctor to write you a prescription for a handicapped parking permit. I think you can then take that to your local tax office or DMV and request the plate or hang-tag, but it depends on your state/county rules. There should be an information number to call for assistance to the disabled who can help answer your questions. Ours is in the front of one of our phone books witht he government listings. Or call the DMV.

Have a wonderful day!

Hi Shawley,
This is true. I overheard the man in the room next to me at the dr's office asking the dr. to write him a RX for a handicapped permit. Then as the above post says, you take it to your local state patrol office. Lots of people with bad backs have them. Blessings!

I agree with the others. Talk to your local Burea (sp) of Motor Vehicles. Generally they have an actual form your doctor must fill out and then you take that back to the BMV and they'll either give you a plaquard or plates. To have plates the car must be registered in your name and not your spouse.

The card is actually nicer because if you are riding with a friend you can take it with you. Sometimes you can get a few of them, I have 2 cards, one for my car and one for my husbands.
Most cards last for X amount of years, after that you must renew them again in the same method, doctor fills out form or gives you and RX.

My doctor had the form on hand, and signed it. I had to fill out my name and and address. It got me the "hang-a-tag" for 5 years. Just had to take it to the DMV. I walked out of there with it the same day.

I have 4 levels of disc herniation, 2 levels of spinal stenosis, scoleosis, sponylosis and a deformed thecal sac. I use a cane to walk and a few years ago, I asked my Pain Doc to sign the form for a hanidcapped sticker. He did so on a permanent basis.

I live in Florida and the process is simple. you request a form from the DMV, have the Doctor sign it, and then present it at an auto tag agency for the sticker.

Frankly, with the amount of pain I have, it has been a godsend.

Good Luck!

I live in PA also...It was really easy....You can download the form from www.dmv.state.pa.us

I would get the hang tag... this way when you go out with someone you can take it with you. Unless you need it for a specially equiped vehicle. But then you can still use the hang tag one.

Then take the form to your doctor and ask him/her to sign it. Get the permanment one. Good for 5 years. No cost... free.. Not the temporary..that is only good for 6(? can't remember now) months... I made the mistake the first time and got a tempy and took the form to a fast tag place and paid $15...then when it ran out I had to go back and pay the doctor to fill out a new form ($5)...then I mailed it and got it back in 2 weeks.

I forget but there are some conditons that you don't need to get a doctor to sign...I believe a police officer can sign it...check the form it tells when you can use a police office.

Thank you all for your help. I wouldn't even ask for it but some days it just hurts to bad to walk far.

Countrykid , thanks a bunch , I'm heading there to download. :)

Hope you all are feeling well today.

The few surgeons I have seen all REFUSED me one, as they said they "wanted" me to walk. This was before surgery.. and I've not asked for one post surgery. Good luck. Tammy:wave:
