View Full Version : Sciatica??

I'm 20 years old and somewhat healthy and outgoing. When I started my first job at McDonalds when I was 18 I began having really painful lower back pains. The pain continued to where my right buttocks began to get dull burning pain, which after so long continued down the back of my right leg. After so long of this, my right foot, mostly my toes, would begin to go numb. The pain would worsen when I sat, especially in a car. I would have to adjust myself sideways to ease the pain some. When I stood, it wasn't so bad. I first figured this was probably just happening from my job, standing on a concrete floor covered in french fry grease. I googled my symptoms and found something about Sciatica. I finally bothered my mom enough to take me to our doctor where he took X-rays. He said everything looked to be normal but gave me visits to a Phyisical Therapy clinic. I was only able to visit once. The therapist moved my joints in my whole body, and noted that my lower spine didn't have as much movement as it should. He said it seemed as though some of the vertebrae in my lower back were fused. I left that day with that in mind and after so long, the pain stopped completely. It's been 2 almost 3 years and I haven't had as bad pain as then, sometimes I will get a 'surge' type of pain but it wont last long and isn't NEARLY as painful.

On to the better part, I read some forums about unusual tailbones. I figure this may be the cause of my 'sciatica' type pain. I do have an unusual tailbone that seems to curve to the right at the very very tip. The area above it seems abnormal as well, instead of being able to feel normal vertibrae, I feel as though some bones purtude where they shouldn't, and small round bone. I do have a small 'scar' close to the area that my tailbone curves. I asked my mom about it when I was younger freaking out thinking I had Spinal Bifida, and she said it was a birthmark. How much of that is true, I don't think it is at all. When I sit on a hard flat surface, such as a floor, I have to sit to one side because the tailbone is in the way. If I sit down too fast and straight down, you can actually hear it rub on the surface. Is isn't painful at all, just uncomfortable to have to sit crooked. Is there anything or anyone that knows what may have caused this. I have no time for a while to see a doctor. Help :(

I have very limited movement in my spine, and besides DDD, I am just very tight... So, I started stretching (PT, etc) and it is slowly getting looser, but has been 6 months, and am not even close to my goal.. Glad to see that you are being proactive and not waiting for your back to be in much pain before doing something about it...

I do suggest eventually seeing a spine specialist, and perhaps get an MRI.. But, it will help for you to stretch your legs and back while on a mat, and keep doing this every day.. Dont overstretch, but just be consistent..

Also, you may want to see a rheumatologist who will test you for Ankylosing Spondylitis, which is a muscular disorder that makes your back muscles unusually tight and can eventually be very painful and be similar to spinal problems..

Hi I am not sure if this is correct, but I think ankylosing spondylitis is a rheumatic disease that causes arthritis in the spine and the SI joints and can cause inflamation to the eyes, lungs and heart valves. I do not think it is a musclar disease.
It varies from intermitent episodes, to chronic disease that attacks the spine, peripheral joints and major organs of the body. You can be tested for this and it ususally occurs in males and in the native american population. My mother was obviously a woman and white and she had it. It was very painful and she only had it in her spine. Karen

Hi LegallyBlonde... I was not sure what it was, but I did see a rheumatologist about my DDD to get his perspective on it besides from what my spine drs told me... He saw that I was very very tight, and said that I should be tested for AS and that it can cause muscle stiffness.. Perhaps, that is just a side-effect and doesnt really attack the muscles directly... Good news though.. My test results game back negative for AS, so it is good to get tested just to rule it out.. Especially if spine drs say there is nothing wrong, and they dont know what could be causing the pain... My spine doctors NEVER even mentioned AS as a possible cause of back pain...
