View Full Version : Recovering from tonsillectomy

I'm turning 18 this year and I just had my tonsillectomy on June 22nd in the evening, spent a night in the hospital and was discharged the next morning.

I'm just wondering when the "sorethroat" will go away, cos it's seriously hurting when I swallow, even cold water hurts.

I was only eating oats the first morning, couldn't swallow the ice cream, but the nurse said she wouldn't remove my drip unless I finished a whole cup of iced chocolate, so down it went. :)

Today's better, I ate some chicken porridge, some packet cheese and ice cream, and now i'm nibbling at a banana.

Also, I've not been given much painkillers, and I live pretty far from the hospital. Should I save them for the scabbing period, or should i take them now cos it really really really hurts to eat and swallow water especially in the middle of the night.

oh yeah and I threw up last night, had serious heaving, but felt so much better. I went in for operation with a cough and cold so a lot of that is making me feel quite uncomfortable now too, sigh.

Any replies are appreciated. :)

Hey there! I feel for you...just hang in there real tight!
I'm on day 10 post tonsillectomy...i'm doing alright. I stopped taking my medication today 'cause it was constipating me. But I still have some throat discomfort and definetely stabbing ear pain.
- very dry throat dispite all day water drinking
- no taste in food/metallic taste in some foods
- get tired faster
- can't pronounce a lot of words as I used to
- voice volume is still low
- stabbing ear pain
- can't swallow as I used to

I feel like I have to re-learn a lot of things  (swallowing, some word pronunciation, etc..) But look at the positive side of it, your tonsils are gone, AND you will loose some weight? (and possibly continue to - mind you, remain healthy).
I'm 29 and I had to live with my tonsils for that long. Having them removed is a shock to my body and so it is to yours...be patient with it. Give it time to heal and recuperate. Take it easy and don't expect to do much. Take your medication - it will help you eat and drink better. Make sure you have an RX refill.
Stay encouraged and feel better soon!

heheh thanks monsterT. :D

i do feel good that the tonsils are finally out, just wish the aftermath was a whole lot sweeter. :p

but oh no! day 10 and still the throat discomfort, plus the ear pain. :( i do hope it all goes away soon for you, that sounds bad.

you know what's weird? i have a *raging* appetite, feel hungry loads, and i'm forever searching for food that i can swallow. i managed to down some bread and butter which completely shocked me and my mom, i never expected to be eating bread 48 hours after surgery.

but i take ages to eat, i'm still nibbling on the bread i buttered an hour ago. :)

do take care monsterT, hope you get better real soon, and maybe fruit juices could help for the constipation? i know they feel real good going down my throat, but yeah i haven't actually gone to the little girly tree for anything 'big' :p in the past three days. i guess that counts for constipation too.

it feels so much better to have someone to talk to about these things and know that they understand how you feel. my parents have never been through this, and my dad especially doesn't understand how it could hurt. thanks for listening. :D

oh gosh i just threw out definitely more than two tblspns of blood, plus i swallowed quite a bit before realising that funny salty taste in my mouth that wouldn't quite go away was BLOOD.

it's stopped now, i gargled with cold water and basically just immobilised myself and i feel much better, but i'm just really worried. should i go to A and E? cos it would take me about an hour and I don't want to waste my time if I don't have to. we were thinking of going to my local family physician but no one's answering at the clinic cos it's a sunday.

i was feeling really good, i even managed mince meat and bread plus a fish essence with ginseng tonic last night for dinner. and i ate only some of the prescribed painmeds cos i was feeling so much better and didn't want to deal with the nausea the painmeds would bring, but then, at night, i started having a very thick cough, full of phlegm so i took my meds...this thing called Mucaine that has anaesthetic in it, really really brings on the nausea, but yeah i braved it, and went to sleep.

throughout the night, drinking water was KILLER, it hurt so bad and I woke up with a slight pain in my ears and my throat feeling liked a peeled potato, all raw and wet and sore.

ate a cereal drink for breakfast, it slid down alright with just some discomfort, and i even ate all my pain meds, except the mucaine cos i took it in the middle of the night.

then while watching van helsing, i asked my sis, "what does blood taste like?" and she shrugged and i ran to the kitchen, grabbed a paper towel and chucked into it, and suddenly blood was all over my hands. and it didn't stop, it filled some of a glass too. gah.

at least after the ice water gargle, it's stopped, but i feel sooo gross, there was blood all over my mouth, and hands and around the kitchen sink. eww.

alright enough ranting, i'm going back to my recliner and hoping for no more blood rushes. :)

maybe i'm reading your post all wrong, but it sounds as though you're saying you bled twice? either way, the last bit you explained sounded serious enough to warrant a hospital visit. i had mine done on the 22nd too. have a lot of the same problems as you, but i haven't bled yet safe one night where i puked so much there was a few drops of blood. that i know is ok, but what you explain sounds 20 times worse. i know you don't want to waste a drive but if you're bleeding that much, you maybe shouldn't wait. you could have been losing lots of blood and could have easily blacked out or whatever else.

sorry, i didn't explain right, andvari. :) only one bleed, but it was pretty bad. :dizzy:

in the end i decided not to go because i felt better after the ice gargle, just very scared and worried, but not bleeding anymore. i didn't eat much at all after the bleeding, so i was pretty weak, didn't walk or get up very much, just sat in the recliner and did nothing lol.

maybe we can compare to see how normal our reactions are and how we're getting along in recovery, given our surgeries were on the same day. :D

today i feel much better though, throat is still raw but better than yesterday, ear pain is minimal and i've no appetite at all, but am willing to try some food.

today would be my...5th day i guess. i can't believe it's already been 5 days, it feels like two. that's a relief that time is passing faster than I thought it would. :)

Day 6...what an improvement.

i woke up with bad signs, needles down my throat everytime i swallowed anything.

but one hot bath later, and some iced milo, i felt tons better, even attempted to speak a few words, got out a couple of full sentences, but it's still a long ardous task to talk.

also, i managed my first "real" meal today, rice with some gravy, non spicy, with beancurd chopped up and veggies. it really filled me up, my first filling meal too!

another thing was that i finally saw the back of my throat. i've never been able to get enough light, or push my tongue down low enough to see, and i was quite surprised. i didn't know the "holes" would be where they were, they're quite high up, and stark white. now i wish i'd gotten a picture, after talking too much my throat is too sore to open up wide again.

i guess my scabs will be coming off soon, but i'm not sure when, or how it will be like.

can anyone give me any insight as to how painful the actual process of the scab coming off will be, and how painful it will be afterwards as well as how much bleeding will happen? because i'm totally lost, and if i happen to bleed again, i'm not sure if it would be because of scabbing or accidental wound opening heh.

Falling_Rain - Don't talk too much! I had a friend who started feeling better and began talking and wound up back where he started and in alot of pain!

As for the scabs...mine started to fall off on night 7. I woke up and had some pretty bad ear pain. My throat was feeling pretty raw and my ears were killing me. The ear pain was mostly after I ate and when I woke up in the morning, but it went away with Extra Strength Tylenol. The raw throat and ear pain lasted until about day 13 or 14 and then I ate solid food for the first time and had no pain. There will be pain when they come off...your throat is basically being left raw when they fall off, but thankfully that is the final step! Once the pain starts to go down you'll see improvement each day thereafter.

Hi there!

Yeah, I learnt pretty quick to take it slow with the talking. Dang though, I LOVE talking and this is making me so miserable. Ah well. I'll just look forward to the days ahead where I'll have less sorethroats and hence be able to talk more than I ever have before!! :P

And thanks for the info, makes me feel better knowing what to expect! :)

hey there.. sorry i hadn't replied on here. i started to feel pretty icky.
i went back to work on day.. 5. i know i know... not smart but i had to. i ended up leaving an hour early. my stomach was a mess and my scabs started falling off... and worse of all it totally hit my gag reflex so already feeling sick.. i called it a day. i went back in the next day, felt great except for my throat killing. i really should try not to talk.. but sometimes i have to say something and i don't know.. i'm thinking about cutting down on the talking. today i had sort of a half day. the rest of the day was a staff picnic so i kind of got the time to relax... and then i had some chocolate. GAH! since then.. its felt like needles going down my throat.. just like you explained it. i think i'm on to day 7 or 8. i had my surgery early on the 22nd.. so i'd say 8. my body overall feels amazing. a little bit tired, but just tired like i'd be after a long day. the only thing is my throat isn't feeling as good as the rest of me. so while i feel good, i keep forgetting my throat is still healing so i'm probably doing more damage to it then good. like that piece of chocolate. i spit it out the moment it stung.. but i had no idea chocolate would hurt so bad!! btw, if you haven't tried it yet i don't suggest you trying chocolate for a while still... something in it just burns your throat to shreds. it's crazy. water doesn't really help.. it does but i still feel it 3 hours later.
anywhoo.. just thought i'd give you an update on all this. i'm still not sleeping full nights. i wake up at least once for pain meds because my throat gets real bad. otherwise, i think i'm doing pretty good. better than what i hear of most. i do see a tinsy bit of blood on my throat when i look, but nothing comes out. i think it may have just been a bit of scab that came off and the skin is really red. meh, who knows! let me know how you're doing.

aww andvari, i'm sorry you've had such a horrid time recovering...i read on your post in another thread that you were hit really badly by nausea and stuff...hope that's a little better for you now. :)

i found that liquid chocolate as in the drink, it slid down really really well...but chocolate's heaty, so that may have irritated your throat.

i know what you mean about the sleeping, some nights i'd wake up feeling parched and no amount of water made it better, so i'd just sit there and try not to yawn cos that hurt too much. once the pain goes down you'll be able to get a better night's sleep. ;)

strangely i feel so much better now, it's like i never went for surgery almost, just very very slight throat discomfort. i'm eating normally, just very little cos i don't want to shake my stomach up too much, i'm talking at my normal tone and loudness too! i think i'm alright now, just need to watch what i do cos there's still risk for strange complications till day 14. i'm so happy this recovery has been shorter than i expected, only 9 days. i went to school today and had a great time catching up with my friends. :)

i think the "red" stuff on your throat may be the irritated skin from your sorethroat and the tonsil removal. mine's still a little red too, looks like the edges of a wound that isn't bleeding but is still sore when you touch too close to it.

take care!! :)

heh, ya i just got some chocolate milk last night and it felt sooooo good. i wanted something that could go down smooth but white milk didn't seem right. i still have some left today.

i was sick again the other night. not sure if it's because i'm pushing myself. my throat gets to be very sore.. especially in the middle of the night. i find if i don't talk during the day, my throat feels a million times better (obviously) but everybody wants to know how i am and what's going on.. even after i tell them i can't really talk.. i think they're just too curious to really consider i'm in actual pain lol. the other day's running around for that picnic did me in but i have monday off work so i can relax and not talk too much. i can't really laugh either and it sucks since i just got some new kittens and theyre the funniest things alive. i just want to laugh but i can't :( bah.

i'm glad you're doing so well. my body has kind of taken a step back a bit.. so has my throat, but i think that might be due to the scabs coming off? my earaches aren't too bad but i got these eardrops that work like a miracle! some pharmacist told me nothing could stop it lol.

dang, now i wish i had those eardrops for my ear pain. a hot towel really helped me sleeping but when i chewed sometimes the pain was AGONY!

i still can't believe you're back at work :P and talking! given your nausea. you're very hardworking. :)

take care, just hang on to the thought that after this it can only get better. :)
