I tried doing a search but couldn't really find the specific answer I am looking for. I hope someone can share experiences or help me somehow. July of last year I got the mirena IUD. It is supposed to contain a VERY small amount of hormones. Over time it is supposed to cause a total stop of a woman's period. I felt that the first option should be okay even though I have a sensitivity hormones. The doctor reassured me that the small amount in the IUD shouldn't cause any side effects. Well over the last 3-6 months I have become increasingly hormonal. I am not sure if I am really losing my mind(lots of mood swings) or if its the IUD. What would you all do?? Switch IUDs? Get on a different antidepressant(I am currently taking Lexapro which was doing great at first) I really NEED help. Thanks alot!!

Does it occur at a certain time during your cycle? I was using it and noticed that my periods were much lighter, but I still had the mood stuff. I would check with your doc. just to be safe due to the anti depressants. Good Luck!

Your Lexapro could be the culprit, but one of my best friends just had her Mirena removed. She had been assured that hormones are local and don't go into the bloodstream. She has a host of medical problems (her mother was prescribed diet pills during her pregnancy with my friend in the '60s), including extreme intolerance to synthetic hormones. For one, she gets debilitating migraines.

Well, she had it inserted about a month ago and was okay for about a week. Then the migraines started, she was moody and she lost her sex drive almost overnight. She has the kind of relationship with her hubby where they have sex at least twice a day (married 10 years; this isn't new for them). She knew it was the Mirena and, over her doctor's protests and insistence that Mirenas don't do this, she had it removed this past Friday.

I'm not saying the Mirena isn't wonderful for an awful lot of women, but some are evidently sensitive to the hormones, IMHO.

Best of luck :)

I am having the mirena taken out on Monday next week. Since I had it put in I have had migraines and been really dizzy. Its too much of a coincidence that its not the mirena causing these problems as it started approx 2 weeks after insertion. I used to get migraines on the pill due to the hormones but haven't had these migraines since - until the mirena.

They say its not absorbed but it definately is!
