Background info: I'm 26 year old female. 5'8" and now weigh about (i hate even typing it) 165lbs. Just over two years ago I lost 30 lbs and was down to 136lbs (about right for my height - i cant imagine weighing any less than this). After losing the 30lbs, it all crept back on when i slipped from my plan. Here is how I lost it and what I've started again:
Very simple - I look at overall calories consumed in a day. I love food (especially chicken nuggets, kraft dinner, pasta, fries, fast food, etc.) I will never be a salad girl. So when I decided I needed to lose weight, cutting out those foods was not an option (I would only last so long then go back). So instead, I eat WHATEVER i want, but aim for 1500 calories per day. So for lunch I may have chinese food or McDonalds or chicken fingers and fries or whatever, and if that meal is 1000 calories, I have very little later in the day (a big meal like that fills me up anyway, so im deifnitely not starving, just stopping myself from having two big meals in a day). By doing this, and adding in some walking and other physical activities throughout the day, I'm hoping to lose the 30 lbs again.
Wondering what people think of this? It just seems so common sense I'm not sure why everyone doesnt do it? I call it the "just dont eat so much" plan!

If you want to eat the junk food and stay at 1500 calories a day, you're not going to be eating very often.
If you look at the previous thread about counting calories that Chevyman started, it discusses your question there.

You are right. I guess I look at it as a way to continue eating what I like, yet losing weight at the same time (I'm not saying junk food all the time, I only eat fast food once per week).

I do something similar, except I'm a fan of lean meats and salads and such, so it's not as hard for me. I can fill myself up for about 800 calories a day and have a candy bar or two as a reward. I think you should focus on finding low calorie foods that you really like so that you can make it through the day.

good idea, littlejanet. i do try that as well. ive been having weight watchers bread for breakfast (instead of poptarts as i did in the past) and the toast actually fills me up and tastes good - all for only 100 calories per two slices! im buying the extra lean meat and also looking for other low calorie alternatives. i didnt mean for my original post to sound like all i eat is junk, its just that those are the certain foods i cannot give up, so ive hopefully found away around it.

I am doing the same thing, and it should work as long as you stay within a reasonable calorie range. Like you, I have made lots of lower calorie changes, but I still like to eat junk food once in a while (fast food, pizza, etc.). When I indulge in that, I just make sure to eat really light for the rest of the day. And you know what? That works for me, as far as motivation goes. I'm losing weight too, so I don't think there is anything wrong with that. I know there are probably many opposing arguments about that, but this is my input. Yes, fast food is terrible for you (we all know that), but it can be hard to give it up when it has become a part of your lifestyle. So, you cut it down, and you may eventually cut it out completely--many people lose their taste for it after changing their diet. But if you still like to have it, I say go ahead, just the way you are doing it--once or twice a week and within your calorie limit.
You should look up the calorie content of all the junk foods you like--most of the fast food chains have nutrition facts on their website. But not all of them do. If I don't know the calorie content of something I am eating, I usually count it as 1200 if it is a fast food value meal (not large sized). Just use good judgement.
We are both in our twenties, with no major health problems (you didn't mention any) so we should be just fine doing it this way :) Good luck!

Here are some of the low calorie foods I've found, Smartpants:
Lean meats like roast beef and turkey on low cal bread (180 calories), most canned soups especially broth instead of cream-based ones (usually 200 calories for the full can), some of the Lean Cuisine frozen meals (like the garlic chicken one - so good, and only 180 calories! mmmm), three light stringcheeses and an apple for around 200 calories, salads (of course), etc.
On the average day I eat all this and have a candy bar for dessert but if I ever screw up and eat pancakes for breakfast or fast food for lunch, I have a way to make up for it at the end of the day.
I think I'm seeing results on my plan. It's a little hard to tell, since I'm not aiming for huge weight loss (only about fifteen pounds) and also, I don't have a scale! But my clothes are definitely fitting better.

I have been doing it for a little under four weeks. It's difficult to tell how much I've lost but I did get weighed two weeks ago and I was 145. And the last time I was weighed I was 155 (although that was in mid-May, so some of the weight may have come off before I started this). Since then I'd say I've lost another two or three pounds more, but once again, I'm not sure. I need to find somewhere with a scale so I can see. But like I was saying, my clothes do fit better.

I am with you on this as well. I have lost 25 pounds in 6 weeks, I do eat the light meals most of the time, but if I want a peice of pizza, or some ice cream I will eat it, without guilt, as long as I stay under my calories for the day. (1200 cals.) It has been working good, because I can have whatever I want, no guilt.

That's what I do, and what I've done for several months to help me lose about 30 pounds. Counting calories works. And once you get to maintenance, you'll be surprised how much you can eat.
I also work out a lot, so that helps me able to eat more.
Good luck! The best advise I can give you is to make sure you are counting as accurately as possible.

That's the only way I stay low calorie enough to give myself a reward. Seriously, I have chicken, turkey or fish every day and salads all the time. And I have an apple or grapes or grapefruit with every meal. The thing about low-calorie-with-rewards is that if you ate only rewards, you'd be starving, 'cause it wouldn't fill your stomach.

Yea I agree with the pesron above me. It's ok to eat bad foods every once in awhile, but to each these really fatty foods everyday, even if you're staying within calorie range, is not such a good idea. Just because you look skinnier doesn't mean everything is ok on the inside. Fatty foods like that can lead to diabetes and heart disease...
I can relate though, because I love fast food and chinese and pizza. But for example, I get a sub from Wawa instead of a double cheeseburger if I want something like that. I still really love the sub, maybe not as much, but it's only 211 calories, as compared to about 400 for a double cheeseburger, with a lower fat content.
Anways, Im definately not trying to preach, but it is not ok for your body to eat high-fat foods everyday.
Have you considered exercise? This way it gets your heart rate going and clears out those arteries and allows you a little bit more leeway with the foods you want to eat.

Oh, I exercise too, but I really like to have some chocolate every day. What's the deal with fat intake? Should I limit it to a certain amount per day? I mean, I know I should, but what amount?
I do tend to eat healthy during the rest of the day. I eat tons of lean meats and whole grains and vegetables, and more fruit than anyone I know. I just need to have some snacks every day otherwise it's too hard.

Hehe the great secret of weight loss revealed! Cutting calories and excercise! Works like a charm, every time! :D
Seriously, something that really will help, go to every fastfood chain you go to. DEMAND their nutritional info. I know for a fact they have to allow access to it to anyone who wants it. Never assume anything on a diet, you have a right to know. If they won't photocopy their nutritional info for you write down the basics. If they try to stop you from doing that, then they don't care about your health, don't give them your business.
Don't just count calories. Count fat, saturated fat, carbs and SODIUM! Not all fast food places are created equal. I started to do my homework and it what I learned was very disturbing. There is a big difference what 1500 of calories full of saturated fat and sodium will do to your body over time, vs 1500 calories of low fat, lower sodium.

You CANNOT get nutritional info from the very best of the fast food joints: QUIZNO'S. I have tried and tried. I don't think there's an actual LEGAL requirement or they couldn't get away with it.
A sad state of affairs becasue the net result iis that I don't buy QUIZNO'S very often because I hate guesstimates.
Bad enough I have to do it in a restaurant!
If anyone can give me some legal information about such a requirement that I can use as ammunition, it would help me hold their feet to the fire.

I was just going to post the same thing about Quiznos!! The other day I went to most of the other fast food websites and they all have great calculators where you can calculate how much calories/fat/etc is in everything on their menu. I go to the Quiznos nutritional info site and it lists the nutritional info for just TWO of their small, lite subs. I've emailed them about this, but of course no response. I havent tried asking in the store itself yet. I think its safe to say though that there is A LOT of calories in most of their stuff. It said 300 something calories for a small/lite sub, well I used to eat LARGE traditionals, the bread itself would have to be hundreds of calories. If anyone ever does find out this info on Quiznos, please let us know.

I "guesstimate" at 900 calories for their "Regular" sized Black Angus and Cheese on Rosemary bread...I haven't a CLUE if that is close or not.
It's a BIG sandwich; who knows, it MIGHT be 1200 <shudder.>
But I think I will boycott them until they spill their guts on the calories.
(I also got a kick out of their website touting those two small diet sandwiches!)

If you go to their website and scroll to the bottom they have two of their subs listed and are working to have all their nutritional available very soon. I am not sure what the exact legislation is, but it is my understanding that foodservice chains were all given a deadline starting on Jan 1st 06, when they had to have their nutritional info available. (same as on boxes in the grocery store).
Example:
Small Turkey Lite
Calories (kcal) 334

Saturated Fat(g) 1
Total Fat(g) 6.0
Carbohydrate 52g
Dietary Fiber 3g
Protein 24g
Sodium 1909mg
Calcium 96mg
Iron 2mg
~edit~ Look at the sodium content in that baby! Now thats what I was taking about earlier!

Ok, I've decided those Quiznos subs I used to eat have to be close to 2000 calories. Trying to eat fast food is proving very difficult if I am trying to stick to my plan. As someone posted earlier on this thread, any fast food meal deal (im talking about the kind i eat, not the healthier alternatives ones) are going to be at least 1200 calories. When you are trying to stick to a 1000-1500 calorie/day diet, its hard to fit that in! I've decided to cut way back on the frequency of eating out, and allow myself to eat more regular, lower calorie foods. Foods that i still love (like pizza, pasta, french fries, etc.), just not as much as the fast food junk. Its funny, I thought I'd miss it, but I really dont. Another thing I've done is stop with the Coke. While i used to religiously drink at least one per day with dinner, I've now cut back to a few per week. I look at it like i dont want to waste 160 calories on a drink!

not a fan of potatos or salad...for people that like that stuff, i think its great that the fast food restaurants are coming out with healthier alternatives. If I'm going to McDonalds though I WANT their fries, and I'm going to have them, it just means eating less/healthier the rest of the day. The whole point of my plan is to not deprive myself of the food I love.

Well in my opinion its not a good ideal to eat this way, even if your not going over your calorie limit for the day, the fast foods are bad for you period, all that trans fat/sat fats and no telling what all is in that french fry grease? some fast foods don't even change out the grease like there suppose to twice a day.
watching your caloric intake means watching what foods you eat, and if your wanting to lose weight in a safe way then this is not a way to do that.
I like counting calories because I CAN EAT THE FOODS I LOVE BUT THOSE FOODS DO NOT INCLUDE FAST FOODS.
a PIZZA or broil hamburger is ok ever once in a while, without the fries. but to me if you keep eating this way it sure will raise your cholostrol. so you better be careful!... it will and can sneek up on you before you know it.
for those who save up(calories) for that big mac or that big cheese pizza or yeast breads rolls deserts at the end of the day thats a bad thing for you, eating stuff like that at the end of the day...is not good. no matter if you do only cosume your calorie limit for that day just think of the stuff in what your eating.

Congrats, Smartpants! I'm also looking to lose about 25 lbs that I gained in a really difficult point in my life (I gained all 25 lbs in about two months..)
I try to do the calorie-counting thing, but what do you do when you don't have access to caloric content of food? For example, when my mother cooks ethnic foods, I'm not sure what the calories are. Or when I go to a restaurant.. I've been shocked many times at the number of calories in salads, and such! I think I must be grossly under-estimating the caloric content of alot of foods, because I haven't been losing ANY weight after a few weeks.. and since I'm in college, i can't get calorie info from the dining hall.

I usually eat a quite low calorie diet and have one day a week where I eat foods I wouldn't usually eat. I don't really eat fried foods but I'll eat a bit more than I usually do and perhaps make myself a hamburger with low fat mince or some healthy takeaway

surrealmeal - i am 5'8" and 140 lbs right now (which is good for my height - i could probably still lose another 5lbs, but not really trying right now, just want to maintain this). I was 165-168lbs at my highest. I lost the weight mainly between June and September of last year - about 1-2 lb per week. what made me happy was i did not have to work hard at all for this! i have another thread somewhere called 'weight loss without cardio' or something like that. all i did was walk extra (at work on break and in the evening). i did it this way because i feel its realistic and something i can do for life - not like a diet.
chevyman - just to be clear, im not eating fast food everyday or all the time. i have mcdonalds maybe once a week, another fast food meal once a week, donut/hot chocolate from tim hortons once a week. when i see people say they treat themselves to one unhealthy meal/month, i just could not live like that. i enjoy these foods and dont see the problem with them at the rate im eating them. if i committed to eating salad and carrots everyday, i could do that for a week then would gorge on every food that i missed. i feel that my plan is realistic, effective and something i can stick with.
lenin -ya, quiznos still sucks! i eat there very occasionally, i still cant believe they dont have their info posted when just about every other fast food joint does. makes you wonder what they are trying to hide!
sarand1pity - thats hard with the cafeteria food. most of my food comes out of a box/bag or from a place that lists the calorie content. maybe you could search online for different foods. different internet pages seem to have a lot of information on calorie content, that may help you make a more accurate estimate.

chevyman - just to be clear, im not eating fast food everyday or all the time. i have mcdonalds maybe once a week, another fast food meal once a week, donut/hot chocolate from tim hortons once a week. when i see people say they treat themselves to one unhealthy meal/month, i just could not live like that. i enjoy these foods and dont see the problem with them at the rate im eating them. if i committed to eating salad and carrots everyday, i could do that for a week then would gorge on every food that i missed. i feel that my plan is realistic, effective and something i can stick with.
lenin -ya, quiznos still sucks! i eat there very occasionally, i still cant believe they dont have their info posted when just about every other fast food joint does. makes you wonder what they are trying to hide!
sarand1pity - thats hard with the cafeteria food. most of my food comes out of a box/bag or from a place that lists the calorie content. maybe you could search online for different foods. different internet pages seem to have a lot of information on calorie content, that may help you make a more accurate estimate.

I like the fact that you are not depriving yourself as I do not think that works in the long term BUT is there anyway that you can limit the days you eat junk food or foods that are not diet oriented. What I did is similar to what you did but I limited the days for those foods, say 4 days a week instead of 7. There are many other foods out there other than salads to eat that are low fat or healthier. That always worked for me.

you're right...arent a lot of restaurants slowly fazing out trans fat? or thats supposed to be the plan at least? i have actually found other more healthier foods that i like and i do eat those somedays (because they taste good, not becasue they are healthy)...but i must say i loved my junior chicken and large fries from McD's yesterday...

I'm new to the board, but I too have been struggling with my weight for the first time in my life. I am 5'5" and never had a weight problem until a year ago when my husband and I moved to the New Orleans area. I weighed in at about 140 then. A little heavier than I had been in the past, but tolerable. Until we found an apartment (which took 4 months) we lived in an RV that our company provided for us. Have you ever tried to cook a meal in an RV? It's not so hard to cook, it's the clean up in that TINY sink that sucks! Anyway, because of that we found ourselves eating every evening meal out. Now finding a restaurant that was open was a challenge and the ones who were open had a limited menu. The pounds creeped up on my until I'm sure I weighed at least 160. Around here they call the weight that everyone is gaining the "Katrina 15". I never stepped on the scale because I knew it would just make me crazy, but i went from a size 8 jeans to a 12. Need I say more? When we moved into our apartment we found that they have a gym with a scale. I waited a few weeks before I was brave enough to get on it. I weighed 157. I was devistated. I weighed 133 and wore a size 7 Junior Slim jeans at age 50 (4 years ago). Well, to make a very long story shorter, once we moved in our apartment and started eating more meals at home, along with walking around the lake at our apartment complex two or three times a week for about 20 mins each, I found that I am now down to a size 8 jeans and feeling much better about how I look. I don't get on the scale everyday (I don't even own one) because I get very depressed if it doesn't say what I want it to. I find that I gauge my weight loss by the way my clothing fits. We still eat out about once or twice a month, but I am finding that the more I cook my own food the pickier I've become! Maybe that is a good thing. :) When we do eat out, we get what we want. Keep up the good work Smartpants....you're doing great and you are an inspiration to me. Thanks.
