I have a 12 year old who is constantly having bad headaches, not migraines. She complains of feeling light headed alot, especially after getting up to do something. I first thought the headaches might have been her body getting ready to hit puberty. But i'm starting to think it may be low blood sugar. Sometimes she says she feels shakey too. And sometimes she gets cold flashes and later on a hot flash. I'm just really confused. A couple of days ago she went w/a friend the the golf course and said she thought she was gonna die. She was so extremely hot and just dying of thirst. She thought she was gonna pass out, but didn't. Other than the headaches, could the rest of her symptoms be from possibly having a small heat stroke or something? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thx

I would call the dr and have her blood sugar checked. It is simple.
Good Luck

Just keep her drinking plebty of fluids and eat a snack when she gets hungry to avoid these.

this could be a case of diabetes not just hypoglycemia.she definetly needs to see her ped for a full eval and physical with blood work, which would include them testing her blood sugar.with just low blood sugar,it normally does not actually have a headache type of component, unless this is left to go on way too long.a diabetic with a very high uncontrolled blood sugar would indeed probably be having some sort of headaches periodically.

an episode of low blood sugar is very symptomatic of whats called cold and clammy while a person with high blood sugar would be more in the hot and dry catagory,do you know what I mean?low BS shows nery similar in nature to a "shock"type of response with sweating,(very prominant),shakiness and extremely light headed and feeling like they are going to pass out.

but while diabetic high blood sugar will also have a headache and a cloudy or confusion type response that will be getting worse over time as the blood sugar continues to rise(but no real sweating).the person will feel kind of totally worn down, really wiped out and usually feel kind of like they have the flu,and also always thirsty.once that blood suger gets up into like the 400s the person will run the risk or ketoacidosis or diabetic coma.

i would really get her in to see her ped as soon as you can get her an appt.tell them what you suspect may be going on and they will most likely get you in the same day.

i am hoping that she just has some wierd virus or something and not diabetes.please let us all know what you find out,K?good luck,Marcia

Thank You Marcia, that was very informative. At the same time, it was very scary to see. Because that describes her to a tee. She has gone to the beach with my in-laws right now, but as soon as she gets back, I am definitely gonna take her. Thank you so so much. I'll keep you informed.

Does she eat every few hours? Blood sugar can drop very low after 3 hours in even normal people, that's why nutritionist recommend eating every 2-3 hours(not large meals) to keep blood sugar levels normal and this also helps avoid overeating at one meal. See if that doesn't help, along with making sure she is not lacking in sufficient water intake. But if it continues, yeah, get her to a doc ASAP.
