Hi everyone,
Well I can't tell you enough how wonderful it was to read everyone's informative posts!!! I had just spent the night with my sister, she talked as I scribbled furiously on a notepad about how much pain I was in. Feeling like I was abit of a whimp, I decided to get on the net to see what I could find.
I'M NOT ALONE, I couldn't believe my luck on reading other peoples day to day accounts post op. Thanks weezy1 if your reading and the others
I had my surgery on the 19th June, I was told it was going to hurt, but that since I had suffered recurrent tonsillitis it would be nothing compared to what I had been putting up with. People either scared me with stories or said they were out shopping on Day 5 (I find that hard to believe now!!!)
Well my experience so far:
19th Tonsils out at 10am, had a brilliant anaesthetic, slept most of the day and had mash potato for dinner, minimal pain relief overnight
20th Managed half a poached egg and strawberry yoghurt with apple juice, was discharged home to my parents (I'm 33 and live alone) Figured this tonsil experience is going to be a breeze as I talked to my mother and watched another adult tonsil patient finish a whole hot lunch with meat!!!! Pain Relief every 6hrs with my penicillin and a great nights sleep
21st My first day of horror, woke up feeling very ordinary. Throat was sore (yep, I had surgery alright) tried to eat my jelly and then......the first of many vomits of the day. I wasn't so worried about the vommiting but bringing up blood (I did) and losing my newly forming scabs (I didn't) After a visit to the Dr, I took some tabs for the nausea and slept the day and night away
22nd I had turned a corner. I felt fabulous compared to yesterday, drank warm tea, pain relief every 6hrs and even managed some cut up sausage. Talking all day, everything will be alright..........Getting ready for bed that night I noticed a funny taste in my mouth, blood. I gargled, and after 4 or so goes it stopped. I didn't sleep that night, as the pain in my throat increased ten fold, the paracetomol/codeine combo was only taking the edge off the pain and swallowing water was like razor blades
23rd/24th With my notepad and paper told my parents no more talking for me, it hurts anyway. I'm finding that luke warm drinks are the best at this stage, icecream not good as it leaves a residue in your throat that you have to try and swallow, lemonade iceys are good and the reliable jelly, I did manage a small amount of scrambled eggs, trying to get something into me as I have lost 3.5kgs since 19th, nothing going in means nothing coming out which is terrible with all the codeine
25th Today, woke with drier throat than usual (strange as I am sleeping with a steam vaporiser in the room to keep everything in my mouth moist) Took pain relief and went back to sleep. I do have to let everyone know that I have been very fortunate that I had a slight earache last night, it was the first one and I didn't wake up with it.
Which brings me to the danger period........Does it hurt when the scab falls off?, some of your posts say yes, others don't say. I was thinking that since my throat is so dry this morning that maybe it's a sign, that it's drying up and coming off. I'm not sure how much blood to worry about.
It's really hurting to swallow, still not talking, and so very hungry, pain relief every 6hrs
I hope someone can give me some insight
Thanks for reading
PS For the people reading who haven't had surgery yet, take 2-3 weeks off work, don't expect too much of yourself like I did then be disappointed with your progress,(you have just had surgery) enjoy the days watching B grade midday movies and tv show repeats
