A natural doctor recommended that I take a vitamin E supplement, but my husband is concerned that it may be too much (the %DV is 3,333%). Do I have anything to worry about if I take it?

princesspixie 06-28-2006, 10:19 AM A natural doctor recommended that I take a vitamin E supplement, but my husband is concerned that it may be too much (the %DV is 3,333%). Do I have anything to worry about if I take it? Sponsor AFH 06-28-2006, 11:28 AM Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) is a great help in fighting effects of Heart Disease, Cataracts, Cystic Fibrosis, Crohns Disease and beneficial in treatment of most Cancers. Dosage of up to 1,000mg (1,500IU) per day is safe. Anything more then that should be monitored because Vitamin E act's as an anticoagulant and can cause bleeding. Other supplements have the same blood thinning effect so you have to be aware when taking all together. Good Luck! Misty800 06-28-2006, 03:47 PM I took Vitamin E 800 IU for several years, then, it apparently built up in my system and caused restless leg syndrome. Stopped the Vitamin E and legs settled down and have had no problem for a few years now. Jennita 07-01-2006, 02:57 AM Get some wheat germ oil which has naturally occuring vitamin e. Anything that is naturally occuring is less likely to become toxic. Of course, foods are the best as far as safety. Almonds are very high in vitamin e. princesspixie 07-03-2006, 01:46 PM I like the idea of getting the vitamin e from my diet. Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't know that about almonds, but I do like almonds so I will have to try it out. Anything natural is better, IMO. I also ended up getting the vitabase multivitamin with a low dosage of vitamin e. We'll see how that works for now. It should be better than no vitamin e. Thanks again.:D 6foot3 07-04-2006, 08:24 PM Also research showing that the Mixed Tocopherols (alpha, beta, delta, gamma) are better for the body than just Alpha Tocopherol. Some of the studies showing Alpha Tocopherol not having much effect on Cancer or Heart Disease are remarkably different when all 4 of the Tocopherols are involved. Also the Tocotrienols are of the Tocopherol family of Vitamin-E....... ratboy83 07-06-2006, 11:53 AM Almonds are very high in vitamin e. indeed like all nuts and seeds, but the best on the nut front for vitamin E are hazlenuts. alex. Jennita 07-07-2006, 01:59 PM I also hear sunflower seeds are extremely high too. Harry 07-08-2006, 01:00 AM Your question is simple but not easy to answer!! Vitamins in the States are not regulated by any government agency-- so if you buy any supplement including E you should buy it from a reputable company. Many years ago I asked a number of manufacturers if they had their products tested by an independant testing Lab-- the only one that responded was -- Nature's Plus--- Since then, I have only used their Vitamin E natrual-- d alpha tocopherol but I am sure their are other that manufacture good vitamins. I take 800 IU daily since reading the Book -- Vitamin E and the Healthy Heart-- written by 2 brothers-- that were Heart Specialist Medical Doctors that did their research in London, Onterio, Canada many years ago. In their book they wrote of buying 10 differant vit E caps--- tested them and only one was 75% of what was advertised --- I have no doubt this practice still exist today. My problem with getting your Vitamin E from seeds or almonds or any food -- is-- How do you know that the almonds/seeds were grown in good soil that contained enough vitamins and has not been depleted of many vital nutrinents? Also, is your digestive system (enzymes and stomach acids) good enough to extract what you need?? Do you chew them enough? Alot of variables and not simple! I wish Ya'll well in your searches--- time will certainly tell~~~Harry Harry 07-08-2006, 10:26 AM A very good article to read about Vitamin E is: http//lpi.oregonstate.edu/fw04/allaboute.html |
