View Full Version : What's The BEST Self Tanner???

Catherine83

I am looking for a GOOD self tanner. I am to the point where I don't care about price so long as it doesn't leave me looking like a carrot. I'm sure you all know how frustrating that can be!
I have always heard good things about Estee Lauder self tanner but have never tried it. Also, I've been hearing a lot about this stuff called Fake Bake. I heard them talking about it on the view not too long ago and many celeb's are using it.
Has anyone used any of these products? If not, could you recommend something?
I have tried Neutrogina and it looked orange on me...I used the spray mist stuff. Also, I have tried this stuff from my salon called "coulor". It was better then the neutro. but still had a slight orange glow. It was also in a foam form which I really liked.

I have been using a gradual self tanner by queen helene called cocoa glow. This stuff is GREAT!!! i love it. it really looks natural and not orange at all. I put some on after my bath and it dries quickly and doesnt stain. I had to buy mine online but sometimes u can find it at walgreens or walmart.

Steph - I will look into that! Is it a lotion or foam? Does it wash off easily? About how much do you pay for it?? I will look for it on ebay :-) Thanks!

Jergens Natural Glow for sure! The most natural looking self tanner I have ever ever found and I have tried A LOT!

It is a lotion and usually i will have a quick rinse in the morning. I think I paid close to $10. I like it cuz it feels like u r just putting lotion on ur skin. I have tried jergens and i didnt like the way it smelled and it just didnt seem natural on me, i have friends that like it though, just not for me;) i have also heard that fakebake is good although i have not tried it

I have searched all over for the Queen Helene Cocoa Glow and cannot find it....maybe Ill have to look online as much as I hate ordering things online. I agree with the smell of the Jergens - not natural, but works for some people.

I definitely wanna try that stuff!! I didn't care for Jergen's either, but a lot of people really like it. It smelled like clay to me. I use Neutrogena Micromist and the misting airbrush spray is easy to use and comes out in a light color (even though it says 3 shades darker.. doesnt for me!).

I've also heard good things about tan towels.. I got one towlette but still haven't used it.. so I'll have to see! I used a Lancome kind and it smelled SO BAD.. it was a lotion. I also don't like the foaming ones b/c they usually smell stronger than the rest and they always stain my clothes if they tinted.

Okay i've heard to use Fake Bake. But what kind do people like most? I see a tanning spray, mousse, self tanner? Which one....?

Sorry for recommending the Micromist.. I didn't see that it didn't work out for you.. That is crazy how one product can be so much different for other people.. I wish it gave me MORE color, haha. The only thing I can think of is that I put on lotion after my shower, and put on the self tanner AFTERWARDS so maybe that's why it comes out more natural on me.. who knows!!

Sephora has the fake bake products.. never tried them.. but I know they have testers out, so maybe you can do a patch test on a section of your body that is covered.

Well, I purchased the Fake Bake brand off of the internet about 2 days ago! I haven't used it yet but I will let you all know how it works on me! At their website it was 49.99 plus shipping but I managed to find it on a different site for 23.99 plus shipping. If it works then it is worth every penny!

If I end up not liking the Fake Bake then I am definantly going to try the Queen Helene Cocoa Glow. It was very easy to find online and the price is amazing!!! You can't got wrong with 4.80 for a 6 oz.!! I noticed that they had a Cocoa Glow with Mango and then one with Aloe. Which one do you use? I may try this brand just for the heck of it. I might end up liking it better and that would save some $$$ - Thanks - Catherine

I just bought the prescrub for tanless tanning from neutrogena (I guess you are supposed to exfoliate prior to self tanning, so you won't streak) and it came with the neutrogena tanning spray...I'll let you know how it works !

Ok, I absolutely hate the spray ! I used the scrub when I showered and then used the spray, which stinks, because it's colorless and you have no idea where it was sprayed and I have orange spots on certain parts of my legs and absolutely no color anywhere else (I'd rather have no color everywhere, then orange spots anywhere !) So needless to say, I DO NOT recommend the Neutrogena Sunless Tanning Spray ! :(

I just sprayed that Neutrogena stuff all over. Gosh, I hope it works for me. After searching for reviews all over the internet I tried it anyway. The fact that it's colorless really makes it difficult to use. Even though you don't need to rub it in I ended up rubbing it in with my hands all over (especially the back) just in case since I have no clue where I put it on. I basically sprayed it all over like a body mist or something. Hopefully the rubbing in will help- and not leave my hands all orange (even though I scrubbed afterwards).
This stuff is trickier than I thought.
Lotins are so much easier... too bad they're all too orange.

I thought this stuff actually smelled okay at first, but the self-tanner smell is starting to kick in. Ugh... they need to make these things unscented.

Let me know how it worked for you. I wanted to return it, but Target is a pain sometimes and I don't feel like going through it, so I might just use it again (until it's gone, hate to waste the money) and then I won't ever buy it again. Good idea w/rubbing it in. I'll try that today !!

I don't know if I should be disappointed in this stuff or if I just used it the wrong way.
So I sprayed it on last night all over and made sure to rub it in really well, I thought by today I'd see a big difference since I bought the Deep 3 shades darker one.
I'm really, really pale... so I thought this would really soak into my skin and darken it by a lot.
Well, it turned out maybe one shade darker so it's barely noticable. I mainly notice it on my face and arms- but that's probably because after applying this Neutrogena stuff I also put Jergen's Natrual Glow (for face) just to make sure that my face doesn't stay white.
My legs are just as white as they used to be. What a disappointment. I expected this stuff to be natural looking for the most part. Guess not.
I don't know if I should have just used more or what, but I gotta respray myself with this stuff again today (probably more than once).
The worst part about it is that I used it in the bathroom and forgot to wipe the floor afterwards... so now I have orange soles. They're literally orange, so I really hope that once I respray this stuff my skin doesn't look the same.
I wish I could return it, but I threw away the receipt.. ugh.
I'm definitely trying Loreal Sublime next time since it has better reviews and it's cheaper.

Judging by my first application this stuff is definitely not worth the price.
I've tried different lotions and they all ended up looking okay on me. I hope after a couple more applications this stuff will start to look better.
I kind of knew it wouldn't turn out as dark as it says since the mist is so fine and literally half of it ends up all over the floor/in the air instead of on you. What a waste.
I'm gonna try and be positive though and hope that this stuff looks better and better.

I've tried other really cheap lotions before, like Banana Boat that costs like $5, and initially it looked kinda weird, but after a couple of days it would turn this nice shade of brown. People thought I actually tanned in the sun.
If this stuff doesn't turn out better in a couple of days than I'm definitely gona try Loreal Sublime, and after that it's back to the cheap stuff.

Wow, I am really surprised that it didn't show up on you at all. I bought the regular one, I am not sure how many shades darker it is, but I still have orange spots on my legs. I put more on today and rubbed it in like you did and the orange spot on my left ankle is starting to blend, but there are still spots everywhere else. I am going to try something else, this time, something that has color in it, so I can see where I hit and where I missed. What a pain huh???

Yea, it's not very fun.
I reapplied it again today and there is more color showing up now. I guess it just takes a lot of applications.
I thought this stuff would look more natural since so many people claim it turns a nice golden brown... It's more like a nice golden orange.
I'm trying something else next time. Too bad I'm stuck with this thing for now.
Lets hope it turns darker after a while.

What a letdown. I was so looking forward to having a "natural" looking tan.

Yep, I'm doing the same. I swear I used like half the bottle last night and today. I reapplied like like two more times since it's supposed to show up after four hours, and it barely made any difference.
It looks okay now, but it's obviously a fake tan. I don't get how people could confuse this with the real thing. Maybe I'm being overly judgmental when it comes to my skin... I'm sure there are tons of other people out there who use this stuff and like it. Surprisingily I've never run into anybody who had an obvious fake tan. Weird how that works.

The next one I plan on trying is Loreal Sublime Gelee since people say it gives out more natural results and works faster. I hope that's true this time.
I'm just gonna use this thing up first... it'll probably run out in a couple of weeks (or sooner).

OH MY GOSH....STAY FAR FAR AWAY FROM FAKE BAKE!!!! So the women on the view go on and on about this stuff and I have no clue as to why unless they are getting paid to advertiseit!!! The kit includes a body scrub, tanning lotion, and an oil spray. Well, I used the body scrub and it was wonderful. Then I got out of the shower and the terror started. I had my gloves on and started on one leg. IT LOOKS TERRIBLE!! Let me put it like this, I would rather look orange then this!! It looks very ashy and dark (but not in a good way). I almost look gray!!! They guarantee it not to look orange and boy it doesn't...I wish it did!!! SO, now I'm going to have to wear jeans or pants for the next week until this stuff fades. I may try a really hot shower. Only one leg is messed up...it's so sad looking that I had to laugh. Also, I had just shaved my legs and when the color hit my pores...it looks like i haven't shaved and have dark stubs...it's nasty!!! DO NOT BUY FAKE BAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just so you know...I was able to get the tanning lotion off before it really set it. I used the body scrub and rinsed my leg in the hottest water that I could stand. I thank God that it came off. I think I'm just going to give up and live a pale, white woman!!! - Catherine

They promise something and than go way overboard with it. Selftanners really suck.
Now that I've been showered multiple times in Neutrogena I actually don't mind it that much. It is looking better slowly... and my dad asked if I went tanning recently or if I used something. He said it looked pretty good, so I guess it's alright.
I'm glad I didn't turn out too orange really. The best part is that it actually works really well when it comes to ankles, wrists, elbows, and knees... I always used to have horrible orange stains and discoloration there from lotions, but now it looks good since this stuff mists all over evenly. :)
Thankfully I can apply this stuff multiple times without smelling horrible.

I found some old tanning stuff in my closet and I used it to try and fade the orange from the neutrogena spray and it evenend out the color on my legs. I gave myself a nice shave before applying it and it looks pretty good. It's coppertone oil free sunless tanner. Who knows if they even sell it anymore, it's probably years old, but it still worked. On the bottle they actually mention something about being careful when you do the elbows, knees and ankles. I noticed why...those are the spots that it clings to first and most !! Hopefully our trial/error will leave us with tanned skin !!!!!! happy 4th ! :)

Yea, I did that too the last time I used Jergens. I applied it all over a couple of days in a row and ended up looking completely weird. So I used some of my old Banana Boat on top of it and that kind of evened everything out.
This Neutrogena thing looks better today than it did yesterday... except my face is orange probably because I mixed it with Jergens. (Good thing make up can cover that.)

I'm sooo glad my palms didn't turn orange almost at all despite the fact that I was rubbing this stuff all over and not washing my hands very frequently. The tips of my fingers are a tad yellow but probably because of the Jergens. It definitely helps to scrub.

Happy 4th!

I'm using Banana Boat's Summer Color Instant Bronzer and Self Tanning Foam in Deep Dark. I used this stuff last time and the only complaint I had was that when I would sweat, it would rub off and stain my clothes. But I think that was because I was putting it on every single day, instead of 1x or 2x a week to keep the color. So I figured I would give it a second try. The good thing about it is that it is an instant bronzer, so you have like a glow right after applying it. Give it a try guys.

I went to Walgreens today and got 4 different self tanners. I got Coppertone Sunless Tanning Bronzing Foam, Loreal Sublime Bronze, Banana Boat Sumer Color Sunless Tinted Lotion, and Banana Boat Sumer color Mist. I am going to try all 4 and I'll let you all know what I think... -Catherine

Catherine83

Earlier I had mentioned that I was testing out 4 different self tanners. Here is my take on the following tanners:

Loreal Sublime Bronze (Medium - Deep) - It smells pretty good but I could hardly tell that I even used a bronzer at all. It also leaves your skin feeling sticky which I don't like...this lasted for hours!! Overall, I didn't care for it because it just didn't show up much. I used 3 layers letting each layer dry. A tad on the orange side also.. This one comes out looking very dark but once applied it fades quickly

Banana Boat Summer Color Sunless Tinted Lotion - A total waste of money. The Loreal Sublime Bronzer Lotion showed up better then this stuff... and that isn't saying much. I did like how it dried quickly and didn't leave my leg feeling sticky!! Overall, I wouldn't buy it...it didn't turn orange though because there isn't enough color to make it do that. Comes out light and stays that way!!

Banana Boat Sumer color Mist - This is the same as above but in a spray. Believe it or not, it had a lot more color to it. It was okay and might look ok on some people but looks orange on me. It also leaves your leg very very sticky for hours... I smelled terrible...and BEWARE when you go to spray it. The sprayer doesn't work very well and it goes EVERYWHERE!!! Little dots of it are all over my bathroom... It wasn't very fun to clean up and if you don't get it cleaned up quickly then it tries to stain. This one comes out with a very light tint.

Coppertone Sunless Tanning Bronzing Foam - Last but not least...FINALLY A WINNER!!! I have tried the expensive and cheap tanners and this is by far my FAVORITE!! This stuff goes on so smooth and dries in 5 min's. It didn't leave my leg sticky AT ALL and it smelled good. Most important, it doesn't look orange...it looks just like I've been out in the sun. I also don't have streaks which is rare. This is worth every penny (I believe it was about 11.99) It comes out tinted so you can see it go on!

A side note : If you want to test out a tanner for yourself...try Walgreens because they are EXCELLENT about their return policy. If you aren't happy with products then they will give you your money back with no questions asked! I've tried foundations before that didn't end up matching and they return them! I'm pretty sure that WalMart is about the same way! Good luck you guys and thanks again for all the info!!!! - Catherine

I too have tried many self tanners only to turn orange. I recently purchased the Queen Helene Cocoa Glow and I love it. It takes a few days to really notice a color, but it was not orange at all and it smells sooo good. I got my tube at Ulta and it was about 5 bucks! I would definitley recommend this one to anyone who has tried all the others.

However, because of my sensitive skin on my face, I do use something different for my face. I just came across clarins gelee for the face. The smell is a bit strong, but it doesn't leave streaks and it gives you a sort of golden healthy glow without looking fake.

They're all fake and orange if you ask me.
I've tried a bunch of different self tanners and even though some of them appeared to look okay, after comparing myself to my boyfriend (who is naturally tan), I look like a giant fruit.
His skin is nice and brown, with an almost grayish tone (not gray or anything, but almost like it)... and I'm bright yellow-orange (sickly looking).
It's really sad that there are sooo many products out there that claim to look "natural" yet none of them actually are even close to it. I don't get why they cannot seem to figure out how actually make the color NATURAL instead of bright orange.
I'm about ready to give up and be snow white for the rest of my life (since I can't tan in the sun any longer).

I can't tan in the sun and I am hooked on Mystic Tan. For those of you who haven't heard of it, you stand in a booth and it sprays you. A lot of tanning places have them. It doesn't really last that long, but if you want a nice tan for a couple of days (like for a wedding), Mystic Tan is great. Just be careful and use the barrier cream on your feet and hands. I know this isn't really a "self-tanner" but I thought I would throw my two cents in since I have tried self-tanners before and none have worked as well as Mystic.

I once thought about trying that stuff. I was gonna go for it but than one of my friends beat me to it. She went and got sprayed and all that. I saw her at school the next day and didn't notice any difference like at all on her skin till she told me that she did the Mystic tan thing. I was really surprised since she paid $30 and there was hardly any difference on her skin at all (it was like 1/2 a shade darker, if that's possible)... I only noticed the slightest difference AFTER she told me that she got it done.
Plus it didn't last very long at all.
That sounds like a good idea, unfortunately it's not nearly as dark as I'd want it to be... plus it costs a fortune compared to the junk you can buy at the store (that actually makes you much darker...orange).

I wish they made that stuff darker and last longer, I would so go for it despite the cost.

I have never tried it.. but I heard for the Mystic Tan there are different levels of color you can pick from. So some people may get a really light, natural looking one, and others can pick a darker one. I have heard both very good things about them and very bad things.. I saw some coupons in the phone book for really good spray tan prices so I might try it out! That way it won't be $30 wasted or however much it costs. One girl I know said it was very streaky on her, another looked VERY orange, but then I know some people that have amazing tans that use it! I guess it also depends on your skin tone and all.

okay, ladies, i've read all of the posts and i haven't seen the products that i myself use with no problems and i hope that it doesn't end up on anybody's crap list.

victoria's secret has a great line called bare bronze. they have a self tanning lotion that ranges from light to medium and medium to deep. it's a creamy lotion that contains aloe vera and vitamin e so it makes your skin feel great. there's no way you can streak or miss spots so i always get full coverage every time. this particular product actually colors the pigment of your skin (unlike many others where the color just sits on top of it) and with each application you get a shade darker. so you get to control your color and once you get to a shade that you like, stop using the lotion. it takes about a week to fade noticeably so there's no hassle to reapply if you're on the go.

i highly recommend this product. after i shower, i dry my legs and use the bare bronze tanner in place of my lotion. it works wonders for me and everyone else i know who has bought it. i think it's about $15.00 a bottle and mine last me about two months using it on a regular basis. it's definitely worth the price. my most pale of pale girlfriends swear by the stuff and so do i.

please try it and let me know what you think. i hope it works for all of you!

Fake Bake is a good product, although one coat is a bit light. The ashy color you saw was simply the color guide (bronzer) and it in no way indicates what the final color of the tan itself will look like. No reason to freak out about it. The final tan of any product is never going to look like the color guide.

And for those who don't like color guides because of rub off - well, just apply it at night before bed, wash it off in the morning, and then you don't have to worry about it.

I USED to do that.. putting on tinted self tanners with the color guide at night and showering in the morning and it was fine, BUT I ruined some pajamas that way after so much of it got on them and it would only wash off some of it. Right now I have a $240 down comforter that is white on one side that can only be spot cleaned.. so I don't want to risk it :(. Sometimes I use a tinted one on my face.. but not all over b/c I could never sleep without sheets and covers! Too bad though!

Which of the Queen Helene self tanners one did you get: the mango one or the aloe one? Let us know how it worked for you!

I've heard about this stuff! Is it tinted? I need something not tinted b/c I have to wear white to work and it's HOT outside and I'll end up staining my clothes if it is tinted. I love VS.. they always have great products!

as far as the tinting, it doesn't say whether it's tinted or not, but the instructions say to make sure to wait about five minutes until it's dry and then you can put on your clothes.

i've waited until the product is dry and i've never had it stain my clothes. i've worn white capris afterwards in the 105% weather out here in sac and sweated in it and i've inspected my clothes, and haven't had any problems.

if you do buy it and it stains your clothes, just make sure to keep your receipt and you can return it for a refund or an exchange. they're really good about that as long as you keep the receipt.

i think it's definitely worth a try. you can check out victoria's secret online and click on the link for the "beauty" section then click on the side link on the left hand side for "Body Bronzers". right now it's the first product that shows up.

Thanks for the VS recommendation! I've been using it for about a week now and really love it. It is not tinted - and gives you really good color, and like you said no streaks. Plus, it doesn't smell at all! I've been a Jergen's user for 2 yrs now, and the VS is better in my opinion. The color also lasts longer. Thanks again!

What does it say exactly on the bottle. Is it just like a moisturizer??

Hi All,

I thought I'd give my two cents. I use Au Courant Instant Tanning Mousse, and I am really really happy with it. The first time I tried it, I ended up more orange than I'd have preferred, but there is one particularly good website out there that gives application tips and methods. The website is not hard to find. I wash off the mousse in about 4-5 hours, rather than the recommended 8 hours. That helps reduce the orange effect. My color is golden brown, and I have a summer glow without the sun :)

Au Courant can be purchased from the AC website. I don't know of any vendors, although I hear that Barney's in NYC carries it. It's not cheap at $29.99 plus shipping. But skin cancer treatments and peels to remove sun spots aren't cheap either.

I forgot to add - Au Courant comes out of the bottle deep brown, so you can see where you are applying it. I haven't had streaks yet :)

you find it in the beauty section. and yeah, it says it's a moisturizer. that's kind of misleading, sorry.

the bottle is like a dark pink and it's called Bare Bronze Collection Daily Glow Moisturizer (but the Daily Glow Moisturizer part is in smaller letters underneath the brand name). make sure you check whether you're getting light to medium or medium to deep, too. the pump spout is a golden color.

Looky - this is the self-tanner from VS (Victoria's Secret) from our previous posts...same dark pink container and gold pump. It's awesome stuff!

I just recently started getting airbrush tans. I'm experimenting for my wedding. I found a place that uses a solution called "Revelation" and I LOVE it! It blocks the orange hues. In between airbrushes I use the Jergens Natural Glow and that really helps to maintain my tan.

Yes, it is an airbrush solution. You would have to get it done at a place that has airbrush.

I liked tantowels pretty much,it didnt turn me orange. The only thing is that you have to use quite a few of them to get dark. Also it helps if you have someone who can reach your back. Its pretty easy to do your legs, just alittle harder to get to your back, hence the need for another person to help.Take care.:blob_fire
