I had this horrible problem too, and consulted a naturalpath who solved my problem.
First off, I had to lose excess weight -- (40 lbs
for me)
Eat smaller portions.
Go easy on acidic foods and foods that cause acid (alcohol, coffee, tea, soda, sugar, dairy, meat)
Naturally re-balance your system with pro-biotics (the good intestinal bugs). Best product is "Primal Defense". It's not cheap, but well worth the price (approx. $30.00) -- you'll be detoxing, while regaining a healthier functioning digestive system. (more substantial BMs/less gas+acid).
Exercise and drink at least six 8-oz glasses of water
a day.
Prescription drugs may be a quick fix, but they only mask the symptoms, profit drug manufacturers, and cause side-effects.

Hello, .....Im happy that the changes the two of you have made have helped with your reflux symptoms....Lifestyle changes always have to be made when dealing with reflux...However, there are varying degree of reflux and some quite serious complications that can occur if not properly treated....When it becomes a serious problem then lifestyle changes alone ARE NOT enough.....Im 50 yrs old and when I was in my 20s I had alot of heartburn and reflux...Tagamet was the new drug on the market at that time and was quite expensive and could only be bought with a prescription....I took it for several yrs. and at that time I was about 35lbs overweight....I lost weight and started exercising more...After a few yrs. of treatment my symptoms pretty much dissapeared...I thought I was "cured"...My Dr. (at that time) also thought I was cured....I stopped the meds. and never saw a Dr. again for that problem...Only occasionally, after that, did I have any type of significant symptoms of heartburn....Then about 18 months ago, I started having swallowing problems and food getting stuck....The pain that would happen when I would swallow sometimes was a terrible pain.....I was sent to a GI Spec. who did an EGD and we were mortified over what he saw....I not only had severe erosive esophagitis, strictures, lg. hiatal hernia, 3 active ulcers. I also had Barrett's, precancerous esophagus, with low grade dysplasia...Bottom line.......25 yrs. of silent acid-reflux had got me...Now, every three months, I have to have biopsies and EGDs because if I progress to high-grade dysplasia then it is esophagectomy for me because esophageal cancer (in most cases) is terminal......Most peole dont progress to Barretts but it is certainly a possibility that you should take into consideration when trying to self treat acid-reflux.......Take care and good luck
