View Full Version : My OH Diagnosed With Type 2 Today

Hi all,

my husband has just been diagnosed with type 2 today.

He went for a blood test earlier this week as he was always thirsty and has lost a lot of weight recently. Also, his mum and his younger brother also have type 2 and he is of Asian origin which means that he had quite a high chance of having it.

He went for the results today and his blood glucose was 26.

Also, we are going on holiday to Turkey for 2 weeks on Monday and his doctor said that normally he would advise people not to go when they have only just been diagnosed and with blood glucose being so high. However, OH was adamant as we booked this holiday over 12 months ago and there was no way we were going to cancel.

OH has been given tablets and is also getting a meter to take readings. While we're on holiday he is going to keep a diary with all of the readings in it to show his doctor when we get back. Doctor advised him to eat fruit, veg and meat, no alcohol (doesn't drink anyway!) and to take a tablet if he feels rough and go to see a doctor.

Of course this is all new to us and we just hope that he is able to get that glucose level down while we're on holiday.

If anyone can offer any advise for a newly diagnosed type 2 we would be very grateful.

Many thanks
Rowdy Angel

My concern would be that he may have been mis-diagnosed as type 2 when he is in fact type 1. Sudden weight loss and dehydration caused by very high blood sugars is typical of the onset of type 1 diabetes.

With blood sugars that high, I would be concerned about the risk of going into ketoacidosis. So I would be keen to get a confirmation of the diagnosis by doing an antibody test.

Cheers,

Mark ;)

I agree with Mark, the sudden weight loss should be of major concern not to mention the high sugars. Keep an eye on the weight loss, especially if it seems to happen quickly and without trying. Also...watch the fruit portions - fructose will cause spikes, especially if eaten alone (have the apple with cheese or peanut butter :-)

Have a great time in Turkey!

I would watch out for eating too many fruits...they are high in sugars....also watch his consumption of pastas, breads, starchy vegs (corn and peas).
Make sure you try and eat small meals during the course of the day...this way he will be spreading his carbs intake over the course of the day and not all at once...his body will be able to process it better and feel more like enjoying his Holiday.
