Hello, I am new to this, but bear with me. I am a 13 year veteran of the navy and was medically discharged 2 1/2 years ago. I have suffered with a hiatal hernia and GERD since 1995 when drugs no longer worked I opted for surgery and had a laproscopic nissen fundoplacation in 1998. Not long after my recovery I was still having problems hence the discharge. Now to the present, the little problems are now big ones. I know have recurring(this list is long)back and chest pain, muscle pain, burning and spasms which are both spreading, trembling fits when I wake up in the morning, nausea, irratable bowel syndrome, dizziness, headaches, pain in the throat and neck,PVC's(sudden lerch of the heart-irregular beat),HCM (heart wall thickening) and just a general malaise because I am always in some kind of pain 24/7 and getting worse. I have been to the doctor many times and they have no clue what is happening. Been to GI docs and they are not sure either. So i did a little research, and found that when you have this surgery there is a chance that the Vagus Nerve gets damaged which regulates almost all of what I just mentioned. Heart rythym, digestive system, thyroid and some muscle function. some docters have skimmed the surface on this but nothing substancial. So my question is, is there anyone out suffering the same thing or has heard any info on on Syndrome X?

Hello, I know much about GERD and acid-reflux as I have barrett's (precancerous) esophagus. However, I dont know much about the negitive complications of nissen fundoplication surgery as I opted not to have it....I have spoken to many people on a barretts support board that have had very positive outcomes with it and basicaly have no reflux symptoms anymore...Why dont you visit your GI and have him do an EGD and see what is going on with it, hopefully whatever it is they can fix and when they do you should see a big improvemnet.......You do know how important it is to get and keep the reflux under control or it will lead to serious complications....Take care........Cathy

I have had a EGD done recently with no outstanding results and the wrap is still intact. Neg.-H.pylori, polyps or tumors. Had 24h pH monitoring done, little to no reflux. I am seeing a GI specialist at the present. And he was the one who told me about the possible complications of the surgery. So the procedure worked but now all the side affects.

Hi there. Sorry for your troubles. I had Nissan fundo done in 2001, and don't have any of the symptoms you report, so can't really help you there. Did you possibly go oversees during your Navy career and come in contact with some kind of virus that's attacking your system? The symptoms you report could be due to fibromyalgia (which I also have) which can only be diagnosed through a process of elimination. Check out the fibro board to see if your symptoms fit. I think it's just a coincidence that your symptoms seem to be related to the fundo surgery.
Good luck,
Katie G

Hello,
I am experiencing the same thing you are. Please let me know if you hear anything else out about the possible side effects of having the surgery. I had it done in 5/99.
Still no relief and just tired of being sick. I am also going to ask my GI doctor when I go back for a follow up 5/21.
Take Care, LML
