Over the past 4-5 years, I have had multiple UTI's and so I have had many antibiotics. Recently I was given an antibiotic for a tooth infection. This med gave me diarrhea for a week. Now I'm sore and itchy around my rectum. Also it feels like I'm swollen around my bladder. I'm wondering if there is anything to treat an infection without using an antibiotic if this last course of antibiotics is the culprit for causing these symptoms. Can anyone relate to this? Thanks

Many times antibiotics will give you a secondary infection. A yeast infection. This really sounds like your problem. The itchy feeling is a sure sign as is the bladder feeling. call your doctor he can give you a one pill that will clear it up.

Well, about a month ago I was taking antibiotics and the doctor had told me to eat a lot of Yogurt so that you don't develop a Yeast Infection and it worked. Because the second dosage of antibiotics I didn't eat Yogurt and developed a Yeast Infection. However, I did start eating Yogurt afterwards and I felt better.:)

Good advice about the yogurt Carolina....
Duck....Try taking lots of garlic powder as you'll kill ''2 birds with one stone'' as the saying goes...The garlic will kill any infection and also kill yeast from over usasge of antibiotics. Also oilive leaf extract is good for both. Then as Carolina says start taking yogurt or probiotics.....

Thanks for replying - I've heard about garlic helping with infections. Would "Garlique" the tablet be better than putting a lot of garlic on foods? I love garlic but don't know if I would get enough to cure - how much is enough? I will also get some yogurt. Should I worry if I see mucus in my stools after taking that antibiotic? Will these natural methods heal this particular problem? Again...thanks. Doctors seem to be "antibiotic happy" to me and I lean more towards natural means, if at all possible.

I'd be remissed if i didn't also agree with Gardenandcats great advice about secondary infection from antibiotics... The Garlic supplement i like is kyolic Aged Garlic as the studies on this type is very good, I personally use Garlic Powder liberally on all my meals (20 oz garlic powder from grocery store) and in about 20/30 minutes after meal with green tea if i urinate i'll smell it strong in my urine so i know my intestines, kidneys, and bladder are being detoxified...You can also ask your DR for a prescription anti-fungal ''Nystatin''. It will take about 10 to 14 days to clean up yeast/candida as this is a tough cookie...take care !!.....

Garlic can help Acidophlous is much better. But its still iffy and time consuming to use either. I still would go with Diflucan its one pill and usually the yeast is gone.More then likely your doc would just call it in for you as you have been taking antibiotics and hes aware of the yeast problems. No need to go in. I'd call and see.

My doctor prescribed "Flagyl". I know it kills bacteria but the last time I took that it caused cramps and diarrhea. So, I'm confused. The first antibiotic that I took gave me diarrhea - which left me with sore, itchy and puss infected bowel movements - why would the doctor call in something that would cause me more diarrhea?????????? I asked her to call in Nystatin - but she chose this other drug. The pharmacist told me that Nystatin was only anti-fungal and would not help the yeast. I'm sooooo confused and tired of feeling like I'm getting the run around on drug info.

Hi Duck, sorry to hear about your troubles. From your history and symptoms experienced (cramps, mucousy stools, itchy rectum, multiple antibiotic courses) it's possible you may have caught a bug called Clostridium Deficile Toxin. Sounds worse than what it is. We see it regularly in hospitals in the UK. Although antibiotics do a great job in getting rid of many bad bacteria, unfortunately they can also significantly kill off the body's good bacteria (especially in the gut) which are used to fight off invading infections. If I was you I'd want this confirmed by a stool sample sent to the lab. Treatment itself usually involves a 7-10 day course of.......wait for it.......antibiotics! Sounds ironic I know. As far as I'm aware Flagyl is the initial drug of choice. However, if this is not agreeing with you, you should ask your doctor about changing to vancomycin in oral form. I do not know of any other antibiotics effective against CDT. As for the other advice, garlic has excellent natural healing properties and yoghurt (must be LIVE) is well recommended as it builds up the guts natural defences. Hope this has been of some use and hope you are feeling better soon. Eamon:)

The pharmacist told me that Nystatin was only anti-fungal and would not help the yeast.
Duck..... sorry to hear about your DR. problems. All Yeast/Candida are unicellular Fungi and you can search this easily on the net. I know about ''Nystain'' personally as my girlfreind had Candida very bad and her DR.prescibed Nystain and within around 10 days it was gone. So shop around for a different DR. and do research on this so you can get better......:)
