Hi all. I am just wondering if anyone knows of anything that can help with plurisy? Every once in a while, I get these sharp pains around my lung (always on my left side), and if feels like my heart is going to explode. It's so painful that I can't breath in, so I just hold my breath or breath very shallow until it stops. I have had this since as long as I can remember. When I was younger/a kid, my doctor said it was probably just growing pains. I'm now 27 (as of yesterday:) ) and I'm still having these pains, so it's obviously not growing pains. Another doctor said it might be plurisy, but then she told me that there is nothing that I could do about it except use a hot pad or take some aspirin or something. The thing is, I can't predict when it will happen, and when it does, it usually doesn't last very long. It just hurts SO bad! Does anyone else have this problem, and if so, have you found anything that has helped? Thanks in advance!

Hey Kim-
I'm sorry you are having this problem. I know it's really alarming when you have any kind of chest pain- especially when it involves your heart feeling like it's going to explode.

I sometimes get something similar where it feels like a very sharp "catching" in my heart and it makes me not be able to breath in without an even sharper "cathcing". I use the word catching because that's the best way I can describe it- kind of like my heart has a nail, or needle scraping it when I take a breath in.

What is going on with you doesn't sound like pluresy. From what I understand, pluresy is more like pain in the lungs and the muscles between the ribs and is a constant pain during inhalation and expiration. Pluresy can last for days, and even weeks. I'm not an expert, but this is just what I understand when a friend who had it explained it to me. Her doctor actually put her on pain medications and it settled down after about 2 weeks.

If you continue to have these problems, you might want to see another doctor for a second opinion. It never hurts to get a second, even third opinion when it comes to your health. Please keep us posted.
