Hey,

I am a 22 yo male and have been taking propecia for about 7 months now. However, my hair is still shedding...I was under the impression that hair loss should decrease/stop after about 6 months. Is this true for everyone or does it vary for people? Anyone currently on or have taken propecia that took a while to work? I am in desperate need of some info/help regarding this because Im worried that it won't work for me.

I would appreciate any responses.

Thanks.

I have heard that this can happen with some people using propecia.

I thought propecia came in 2 doses- 1mg and 5mg. If this is the case, perhaps you should make sure you are using 5mg.

Propecia is the trade name for finasteride and is only sold at the 1mg dose for treatment of male pattern baldness. Proscar is the trade name for finasteride sold at 5mg dosage for the treatment of prostate enlargement.

According to the manufacturers taking extra dosage other than 1mg will not improve results, but hair loss should stabilise after 6months.

Please do not post telling someone that you would give them certain information if it didn't violate the rules.

If you know something violates the board rules then there is no need to even discuss it on the boards.

Thanks for the response guys.

If I remember correctly, I read somewhere that at first, Propecia will make your hair shed faster than usual for a short period of time before stopping and then having your lost hair during that period regrow. Can anyone confirm if this is true?

I am in my thirties and my hair is super thick and always has been. I started using minoxidil, first 2% then 5%, in my low twenties, and I started finasteride six years ago. I also take this vitamin supplement called MAXI HAIR that people on here have written about. My hair is not only thick - it grows at an alarming rate. I need a haircut every 3 - 4 weeks.

I have no idea what my hair would be like if I did not take these measures, but I do know some of my friends are already bald, and many are thinning. I have experienced no side effects from the finasteride and my sex drive is superman like.

BUT just before I started the minoxidil it did seem like my hair was thinning on top, but within a few months of starting the finasteride it was thick and bushy again and no shedding.

One thing - I take 2.5mg of finasteride per day, not just 1mg. I have tried going back and forth between 1 and 2.5mg and I did notice a bit of shedding when I cut back to 1mg, so I am proof that taking more does help.

Also, my friend takes 2.5mg too, and he experienced the same thing - 1mg did not work for him but 2.5 did. I maintain the 5% minoxidil also for maximum FIREPOWER.

I read taking Proscar can cause breast enlargement, has anyone experienced this and if so what do you do? I asked my doctor about Propecia/Proscar and he said it was not covered by my insurance so does this mean I am not able to get a prescription?

Ive been on Propecia now for about 5 months. I, and my co-workers and friends just started noticing a difference in the past week or so and they dont know Im on propecia. After looking at the spot on my scalp that was almost a full blown bald spot, it is amazing how the hair has thickened.
