Please help.......I don't know what to do next. I've been having upper right qaudrant pain for several months now. The pain is located below the right rib cage and it's a spasm like pain that comes and goes for about two hours per episode. I get a couple episodes a week. I have had an ultrasound, CT scan, and Hida Scan.....all were negative for gallbladder problems. CT scan did show a 1 inch cyst on the right kidney but doctor reassures me this is normal (?) and CT scan also showed fluid between the intestines on right side. I am so tired of being poked and prodded with no answers and I have no idea what step to take next. My doctor has mentioned exploratory surgery....I'm not real excited about this since I have been thru several adominal surgerys including a hysterectomy already. Any thoughts?
Thank you........

Shelli,
Sorry about you pain--- it can be frustrating.
Sometimes after surgery you can get adhesions that cause alot of pain. For some reason they can not cause problems --- then for no reason you'll have spasms and cramping along with PAIN.
You could try a homeopathic remedy that is very good for all sorts of spasms and cramping -- Magnesia Phos--- just take it like it says on the container. You can buy the remedy at health food stores. You really have nothing to lose. I have found regular Medicine has nothing any better!!!
More surgery could cause additional adhesions--- who knows??
God Bless---Harry

Hi Shelli. Does the pain happen shortly after eating? If so, it could still be your gall bladder - all my tests for gall bladder were supposedly "normal" too (including the hida scan), but it was still my GB (very inflamed at time of surgery). During your hida scan did you have CCK injected too? Sometimes the output of the GB is normal (which is what the hida scan measures), but when CCK is injected, it can elicit a pain "attack". That's another way that docs can tell if the gall bladder is malfunctioning.
Hopefully you'll get some answers soon. Harry's right too - it could be scar tissue and I can understand your reluctance to undergo another surgery.
Hang in there and keep going back to your doctor if the pain continues or gets worse. Something will show up eventually.
Good luck,
Katie G

If I may offer one bit of advice here. My significant other had her GB removed 3 years ago this month. After having numerous problems since then, we finally got to a gastro in Chicago who suggested that although the test results on her GB showed that it was only functioning at a 10% level, it didn't necessarily mean that she needed to have her GB removed.
We are both kicking ourselves for not getting a second opinion on her condition and a confirmation on the need for surgery.
Best of luck! :)

Have you been experiencing any heartburn with this other pain?

Just a little more info to answer your questions.....
Yes I had the CCK with the Hida Scan. I had no reaction during the test itself but the pain did reaccur about an hour after the test.
Nope....no heartburn........
