I had my gallbladder removed on June 16th. The procedure started as a Laproscopic Cholecystectomy, but the surgeon had to convert to an Open surgery as I had abdominal scarring that made imaging the area difficult. Prior to this surgery I had three ERCP's because of a largish stone that was lodged in my bile duct causing biliary cholic and some jaundice. The recovery time for a open Cholecystectomy is supposed to be on the order of 4 to six weeks, and I am about five weeks from the surgery now. Most of the pain from the incision is gone now, the wound is healing up nicely. I still have some digestive quirks which are beginning to get annoying. I was wondering if anyone has had an open Cholecystectomy as opposed to the laproscopic one. During my follow up visit with the surgeon he said it takes two to three months for the digestive system to normal itself out. I would like to hear from people who have had an open Cholecystectomy and see how the course of their recovery went. I am hoping my symptoms continue to improve. They are not at a completely incapacitating level, but they are enough to definately interfere with the quality of my life. I am a 26 year old male. This seems to be a genetic problem in my case, my father has problems with his gallbladder as well. He was hospitalized once, and they encouraged him to have the surgery to remove his gallbladder, but he refused. They gave a special low-fat diet which he never used either. He is now 73. He occasionally has problems with his gallbladder, but never anything too serious. If I hadn't got a stone stuck in my bile duct, I wouldn't even have come to realise yet that I had gallstones. lol. My diet is fairly low-fat to begin with, I haven't eaten much red meat in years.
