Hey Ladies & Gents,
I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, but you have all been so helpful in the past, and I am literally out of places to ask questions on this one. A few years ago (more than 5 less than 10) I was out walking around with some friends of mine with open toed shoes on. I am exactly sure how it happened but one of my friends wound up stepping on my left big toe and breaking off the nail. The nail broke horizontally, I treated it at the time with some cream and covered it for awhile to prevent infection, when it started to grow out I took the bandage off and let it grow in. The problem is it never grew in correctly. It's hard to explain, but it basically grew back in 3 seperate sections, vertically split. The first (all the way to the left) was my regular nail growth, in the middle was a section the looked bubbled up like there was skin growing underneath and also had a crack at the top, and the far right was like a normal nail growth that ended where the middle one began. Over time it became painful and I went to a poditrist, recommended by family. He told me that there maybe damage to the nail bed, but he wasn't sure and his only suggestion was that we remove the whole nail. I didn't want to have the nail removed because I would have to be awake during the whole procedure at his office, and I am a real baby about those sorts of things. I also had a notion that it was a fungus that was affecting the nail because I had suffered on and off from athlete's foot in the past.
After a few years and a few pedicures the top layer of the middle bubbled up layer of toenail was gone, and the pink skin underneath turned black...but only in that section. After that the black part fell out and it looked like a dogs toenail, just very waxy. I was left with a tunnel like hole in my toenail that went from the top to very near the cuticule of my toenail. I haven't ever gotten a second opinion, but the nail is very ugly and sometimes bothersome. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas what this might be?? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
