Hi all I have decided after seeing my doc with no resolution to lower my toprol dose to see if it stops the tingling I have been feeling in my hands and arms in the mornings when I wake up. Currently I take 100 mg in the morning and again at night. I am thinking about stoping the night 100 mg dose. This morning my wife commented on how cold both my hands felt, a sign of poor circulation. I also take 16 mg of atacand twice daily, but do not think it is the reason as it expands the arteries. Toprol on the other hand reduces the number of heart beats. Any thoughts on this matter?

Make sure that you do not have a vitamin B-12 deficiency, which can cause your symptoms. If not corrected, this deficiency can damage your peripheral nerves. Medicines for GERD (PPIs) can cause this deficiency. I am going through this now.

What is GERD's and PPI? My symptoms are only happening in the morning causing me to wake around 5:30am, they persist if I try going back to sleep. They do not happen the rest of the day. I think because I am up and active. More insight?

Gerd = Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

PPI = Proton Pump Inhibitor = Nexium, Prilosec, etc.

You probably don't have a B-12 deficiency, but it causes the symptoms you are describing. Poor circulation also causes the same symptoms. The nerves may not be getting the proper amount of blood flow.

I do not have gird and do not take a ppi. My blood pressure has been as low as 96/48 first thing in the morning, I think this is too low. My doc does not. Your opinon? Stats 5'8" 192 male.

You are over-medicated. Your readings should be at least 90/60. Low BP equals low blood flow. No wonder your arms and hands are tingling. Remember to exercise once you join the living. You must have the energy of a snail.

That was an extreme low. Normally first thing in the morning it is 105-110/60-65 pulse in the 65-75 range. During the day it is 110-120/65-75 pulse 65-75 I exercise for an hour everyday. Lifting everyother day and treadmill on the other days. I recently lost 33 pounds and have been exercising for 6 weeks now. MY meds are toprol 2x daily 100mg and atacand 2x daily 16mg. I feel that with the change in diet and exercising it is time to adjust my meds!

Do NOT just cut one of the doses. You will have major rebound heart issues and could end up in the hospital. You have to gradually wean your body off Toprol, and I do mean gradually and you should be under a doctor's supervision when you do it. I too was on 100mg twice a day. 2 weeks at 50mg twice a day. 2 weeks at 25mg twice a day. 2 weeks at 12.5mg twice a day. Then I cut out one of the doses. At each taper down my heart raced quite a bit for a day or two. Even cutting that 12.5mg dose out caused rebound.

As a side note, yes I had tingling in my arms and legs while on Toprol. But the reason why I tapered off of it and onto an ARB is because it wasn't doing anything for my blood pressure. I did noticed that as I tapered off the Toprol, the tingling went away with smaller doses.
