I have been battling dd unexplained health problems for 5 yrs. Drs are really no help. I know something is not right. Her MAIN problem is her bloating stomach, when she wakes up it is not that bad, but when she eats she looks pregnant. Her face even swells.
Here is some brief info about her.
short stature
overweight (mostly in belly)
Use to have stomach cramps alot (right side), but better now
gains weight very easily( unexplained) She is very active and doesnt eat a whole lot.
constipation ( I have found that milk causes this for her)
Sounds strange but 2 medicines she was on different times and had strange side effects were Lactulose Caused ALOT of weight gain. And Steroid (for asthma) caused her facial swelling and bloating to go away.
She is very allergic to dust mites, she had a skin ***** test done for allergys. Had a food one done and she had a higher reaction to soy. But not enough to say ALLERGIC, but I do believe in Food Intolerances. But he didnt. SO???
Does not have memory problems at all, she helps me all the time with my memory problems. LOL
She was always underweight as a baby and toddler and short (still is) Dr. says she grows slow, she has been checked for being short and not growing like normal but no concern for him because he checks her height every few months. But the weight gain is a a concern, she has gained 6 lbs in a month before, and her eating did not change at all.
RIght now i am going with York Labs for food intolerance test IGG ELISA
But if anyone can suggest what to do i would greatly appreciate it.

BTW - I really love this board.

TN-
I know it's very upsetting to worry so much about your child's health. My only suggestions would be to do some of the following:

See a pediatric GI specialist to check for any kind of gastrointestinal problems such as celiac disease, chrons, colitis, other types of food allergies such as wheat allergies, lactose allergies, etc.

See a urologist to check her kidneys. With the bloating, unexplained weight gain in her stomach only, and slow growth patterns, it would be worth looking in to. This is one I would look into immediately.

You keep doing as much research as you can and keep trying to find a doctor to give you some answers. You are doing the right thing. I wish you and your daughter the very best. Also, another thought- have they tested her for diabetes?

hi tnmom03. I am sorry your daughter is dealing with so much.

I suggest having her thyroid checked. Ask that they test the Free T3, Free
T4 (besides the T3, T4) and thyroid antibody tests. These are all blood tests. They are not usually done but are necessary for a comprehensive view. Get copies of the results. If you want to post them on the thyroid board at this site, the people there could help you interpret them.

You may want to post this information at the thyroid board here. There are some great people and maybe they can give you some feedback. I have a thyroid problem, but am relatively new to it.

Do not give up okay? You will find out what is wrong.

I can sympathize with you in that. For several years I knew something was wrong. The doctors just brushed it off. Then one doctor we met was interested in child diabetes and so he tested her. She was 9 when she started insulin.

I knew there was more to it but had no clue. Since I had been so insistent that she had a problem before and found I was right on that they were more inclined to listen to me with this.

She was thin and rather small. But I could see swelling in her face that no one else could see. This got really annoying and one day I told the doctor that if and when she was up in the morning and was her old self I was going to find him. One morning shortly afterwards when she got up the swelling was not there at all. So we went to the hospital where we knew he was making morning rounds and we caught up with him in the hall. He did not recognize her. I told him that "this is my daughter."

He admitted her to a large teaching hospital and they started tests, starting with the kidneys. They kept her 2 weeks and still had no clue as to the problem.

My husband was transferred to an area that only had a dispensary and doctors that had just become doctors. Upon arrival I had an apt. To introduce her to him because of her diabetes. (There was no home blood glucose test.) The first question he asked was what she is allergic to. I was dumbfounded I should have known that. But I asked him why the question and he started pointing out the same things I had been telling the doctors all along. A main thing was that her eyes looked like they were "floating" I told him she had just gotten out of a big hospital and they had found nothing. His reply was that big teaching schools look for the unusual rather than the obvious.

She really disliked home ecconomics class and complained saying it made her sick. Well I thought she is allergic to "home ec". But the teacher told me that she would come in at the beginning of class and looked totally different toward the end. She really was allergic to it. They tested her for lots of things and the villains mostly were cleaners. At school there was a barrel of cleaning material in a closet with an adjoining wall.

I don't think we found a food that was the problem. It was cleansers of all sorts, dust and of course dust mites. We took all her stuffed animals out of her room and had no carpet on the floor. She had to dust her room every day. They started allergy shots, some oral medicine and things became much better.

I hope a solution to your problem is found. As a mother it is very bad to have a child you know is ill and no one listens.

I hope you find out what is wrong with your daughter! I know how scary it is when your child is sick and noone seems to know what is wrong. We live in a relatively small area, and FINALLY got a diagnosis months later at childrens hospital. He is now 10 ears old and has AIH. I think taking her to a GI doc would be a good place to start.I would have them run an autoimmune panel as well as a cbc... so many things it could be...celiac,thyroid,chrons,colitis ,alergies, etc. The thing that is interesting is tht the steroids reduced the swelling and many autoimune diseases are treated with them. When we finally got my son to childrens hospital he had extreme swelling and unknown origin in the beginning. It immediately reduced his swelling over a period of days.As he was on rather high doses for several months,he had swelling and weight gain due to the higher doses of it.(It is used with him to lower his immune system.Ok I'm rambling lol.Good luck on your daughter and let ua know how things go.
