Has anyone else ever been on Prozac for OCD and/or anxiety? What was
your experience like--moods, physical symptoms, etc.?
I've been on Effexor XR for some time now and it isn't doing anything
for me, so my doctor and I discussed switching to something else. She
said Prozac, while known for its success as an anti-depressant, is
excellent at treating both OCD and anxiety. Is it an SSRI? I think it
is. Anyway, she wrote out a plan for me to taper off the Effexor XR
gradually, going down from the 225mg a day I'd been on to eventually
0mg and then increase the Prozac to 20mg. I really hope it works to
ease my anxiety and OCD.

I've taken Zoloft, Lexapro, Zoloft again, and then Prozac for my OCD. None of them really did anything. Lexapro actually made my anxiety worse. All three of them made me extemely tired. I'm not currently taking an SSRI for my OCD. The only psychiatric medications I take now are Lamictal (daily, for my Asperger's outbursts) and Klonopin (only when needed, for my panic attacks). I switched from the Zoloft to Prozac in November, the same time I started taking Lamictal. I did notice a decrease in my obsessions, but that was only because, in my opinion, I was going through a waning period; I'm a classic "waxer-waner" since I'm a pure obsessional. I stopped taking it some time this spring, and I have noticed an increase in my obsessions, but only this past month or so. I was off the Prozac for a couple months prior to the obsessional increase, and I was having absolutely no obsessions whatsoever. I believe that, for me, SSRI's only take a little edge off of my obsessions, but I know that they don't work for me. I had two breakdowns while on an SSRI. I figured that I'd rather deal with a tiny bit more obsessions and not have the awful fatigue. As for anxiety, SSRI's never did anything for me. The only thing that can get rid of my panic attacks is a Klonopin, and even then, if it's a really bad one, which is really the only time I ever take a Klonopin, I may need more than one. (I'm really supposed to take it once a day, every day, but it, too, made me tired, and I've lived with panic attacks since age three, so I only use it when my panic attacks get too hard to handle.) I truly hope that the Prozac works for you. I have a feeling that you have a much higher chance of success on it. I don't believe Effexor is approved for use in the treatment of OCD; Prozac was the first SSRI found to have anti-OCD effects. Lexapro hasn't been approved, either, or at least it wasn't when I took it in the fall of 2004. I was wary about that, but I felt it was worth a shot since my mother (and now my maternal grandfather) takes it for unipolar depression. However, neither one of them has OCD, and the two of them are like genetic clones of each other... Anyway, good luck, God bless, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask!
