Hi all,

My doc has prescribed Colofac 135mg tablets for my IBS-D. It says to use them 3 times a day; however, the doc has told me to use them as and when i need them.

Anyway, i have read the instructions for what this medication is to treat. It mainly refers to stomach cramps. I do have tummy pains but my main concern is diahorria; will the Colofac help to reduce this??

many thanks for any help you may be able to give.

hi

The colofac should help to reduce the loose stools. Colofac works by trying to get the bowels back into a "normal" routine.

Also you could try peppermint tablets, such as colpermin......these are very effective with stomach cramps and loose stools.

Sharon,

Thanks for your response. Shouldn't Colofac be taken on a regular basis to get my stomach back into a routine. My doc has told me to only take a tablet as and when i need it; even though it says three times a day on the prescription. Wouldn't this defeat the object of the tablets?

thanks
Paul

hi Paul

All tablets work best if they are taken on a regular basis as they get in the system and help to regulate it.

If i was you i would take them 3 times a day as stated on the box whether you need them or not and see how you get on. Also it is best to take them at least 20 minutes before eating as most people's symptoms worsen after food, therefore taking them 20 minutes will give the tablets time to work.

I hope this helps.
