View Full Version : Help! Seroquel causing rage?

I posted yesterday about Seroquel making my husband a zombie. Yesterday, when the meds wore off a little, he went into a manic episode like I've never seen before. It started with him cleaning house. He was all over the place. Then, he started on the yard. He was talking 90 miles a minute and I could barely understand him. I knew the rage would start in soon, and it did. He was filling his plate in the kitchen and something, not sure what, happened. He threw his plate down on the stove, breaking it, and then started kicking the stove. He calmed down a little bit, and then went into a rage again. He threw our laundry basket with all the coat hangers on it into the kitchen. He had ruined the food because the plate broke into a hundred pieces and we weren't sure what the pieces were in. He wanted to go to town to get something to eat. I suggested that instead of spending the money, we would just eat leftover. He started jumping up and down like a child shouting he didn't want leftovers.

Then, he told me that he had nothing wrong with him. His parents had told him that he didn't, that it was all my fault and he needed to leave me. He said he was miserable with me. I told him fine, that I would be leaving in the morning. He said he was mad at the world and didn't know why.

Finally, he calmed down, went into town to get his food, came home, ate and went to bed. He seems a little better this morning, but still filled with rage. He has a doctor's appointment this afternoon.

This is the worst episode yet. Could the seroquel be causing this? I'm not sure if it was just a particularly manic episode or if it was the meds. I hate this. I'm not sure how much more I can take.

I don't know if the Seroquel is causing the rage, but one thing's pretty clear: the Seroquel isn't working effectively. If he keeps having to ingest Seroquel, lest he becomes manic, something isn't right with the medication...

Thanks Gatsby. I wish we could find what will work. I guess it's a long, slow process.

My husband takes Seroquel and I haven't noticed any rage as a result. He takes it only at night because it does make him drowsy. It is an anti-psychotic so I don't know what impact it would have on a manic episode. My husband was prescribed it due to his extreme paranoia - he thinks the FBI and everyone else is out to get him.

I guess Seroquel can be used as a mood stabilizer. I'm waiting for medication changes to start working with my husband, too. I know it can be a very frustrating and long process.

I hope things get better for you.

Atypical anti-psychotics, of which Seroquel is one, are often used to treat bipolar disorder. It may be because bipolar I's actually are psychotic, but many people who are bipolar II, and therefore, have never been full-blown manic and psychotic, take them, too. Sometimes people who are bipolar can just be on an atypical anti-psychotic, but usually, they take a mood stabilizer and add an atypical anti-psychotic to enhance their treatment.
