I did not see a board for vascular disease. I am looking for any information, preferrably someone who has had experience with subclavian steal syndrome or disease. My 63yr old mother who is also hypertensive and diabetic has been diagnosed with subclavian steal. She is symptomatic with dizziness, arm pain, coldness and tireness. She is scheduled for surgery Friday. I have read a ton about the syndrome, and the surgical procedure however, I have not been able to find anyone who has had experience, either a family member or themselves. She is having a carotid endarectomy (which she has had on the other side 2yrs ago) this is on the other side, and a axillary to axillary bypass.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerly,
Concerned Daughter

Thesse,
I can tell you to be thankful they found it. My mother had heart bypass surgery in 1983 and did great. She began to develop very slight symptoms of AD around 1993. Her blood pressure has for years been impossible to get in the left arm but nobody seemed to think that a bit unusual upon examination. The first of April her AD seemed to start really progressing with some delusions and paranoia. My brother and I were keeping a close watch on her still at home and home-health was coming. On April 11, she fell one afternoon. I took her to the ER. They found a broken hip and also subclavian steal on the left side blocking 80% of her blood flow to that side of the brain. It's been constantly downhill ever since. She is at the nursing home and will never be able to be home again.
