Can a strained neck muscle cause headaches. I went to the Dr. yesterday for neck stiffness and pain and was perscribed a muscle relaxer (flexeril ) and ibuprofen. I had x-rays but don't have the results. The headaches seem to start towards the back of my head and go forward to the top of my head. thanks for the help !

I hated how flexeril made me feel, I prefer skelaxin..I can function on it without feeling all depressed...but honestly neither would completely stop the pain. To answer your question, absolutely your neck can cause the headaches! I've been doing it for 20 years now..my Dr. is a D.O., he gives me adjustments & that helps MUCH more than any medication does.

The answer is a big fat yes. After a long drive, I will get the worst headaches cause my neck was not getting enough support while I was driving. Sometimes I think I should just wear neck brace to avoid it while driving (but that would probably look funny).

Yes, I recently have been going through PT for whiplash, TMJ, head, neck and shoulder pains. Recently started migraine and headaches meds regigm. No muscle relaxer though.

Crushme, if you don't mind asking, how is the PT going? I'm starting next week with mine. I have had migraine headaches for 8 years now, but over the last 4 or 5 has turned into shoulder, neck and back of head pain, that is sometimes there everyday. Do you ever get a strange feelling on your face when your neck and shoulders are hurting? Mine is best described as a tickling or bug crawling sensation. Had a brain MRI done in April for these strange feelings and also for the headaches, everything was normal except some sinus thickening. I am starting to get scared about these feelings, and besides that, very, very annoyed, its hard sometimes to talk to someone without touching my face. I have heard that a lot of people have these feelings related to TMJ, my jaw doesn't seem to hurt, although it does click when I open my mouth, my ear on that side also hurts sometimes, and that is the same side where the neck, shoulder and migraines are. All this started after a minor car accident 8 years ago, although was in one about 17 years ago when I was rear ended. I'm scared that I have some kind of neurological disorder. Please let me know about the facial thing thought, thank you kindly!!!:)

Most definitely neck pain can cause headaches. I get them from staying at my computer and kind of straining (chin pressed forward) my neck for too long. The pain will go right up my neck and into the back of my head, finally settling on the right side as a migraine. I even get weird sensations in my head I believe are coming from the pain in my neck. I massage the tension out of my neck and the sensations usually go away, though I usually have to take something for the headache to go away.
