I am sure there are members that have used a mental health counselor to work their way through recovery and i have a couple of questions.

I just went to a mental health counselor to work on issues with pain pills(hydro) that I picked based on whether they took my mental health insurance or not.

I did NOT like the manner and style of this person and wanted to know if I should "tough" it out and get to know this counselor or find a new one? She is "holistic" and said that even '"ibuprophen and aspirin" are toxic and should not be used to manage pain. Say what!!!!

Please let me know your experiences and thoughts on this matter and it is great to read all of the personal experiences on here and I wish everyone success in your own recovery.

Hmmm.....I'd be findin' a new one, I'm afraid to say. If I disagreed with someone on something that basic, I think I'd have a hard time taking much of his/her advice. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on what to put in their bodies, but most people can metabolize ibuprofin and aspirin quite harmlessly when taken in the correct dosages. Just my 2 cents.

There are good counsellors and bad ones. Just like there are good teachers and bad teachers. You are paying for a service. Don't waste your time or money on one you don't feel comfortable with. Trust your gut. Some aren't any good, are very opinionated, just don't know their job, aren't people persons or just go into work because it is thier vocation choice and they need to collect thier pay.

A good counsellor will make you feel comfortable, safe and someone you should trust. Counselling should be a give and take experience, where you talk, they are interested in what you say and give you constructive input to help you.

Do a search on the internet on how to pick a good cousnellor, I am sure there are many articles dedicated to this.

Hope this helped.

My2-
This is deffinately a situation in which you have to feel 100% comfortable with the person treating/helping you. If you are not comfortable, then you should absolutely try and find another counselor that you feel comfortable with. If the relationship isn't mutual and compatible, then you probably won't gain any kind of benefit.
