Several months ago, I whacked my calf muscle very hard with the car door. The result was a large, raised bruise. The bruising is long gone but the lump under the skin is still there. Has anyone had this happen to them and, if so, is this something that I should be concernd with or will it just take a long time to go away?

I haven't had exactly that happen but when I used to train martial arts I overstretched...repeatedly within the same few minutes...and tore a groin muscle. Very painful and I was on crutches for a couple of days.

I had a hematoma and hard lump in that area for over a year, until through stretching and such it eventually went away.

That's probably what you have there - a hematoma or localized collection of blood, usually clotted, in the tissue area. Will go away with time and exercise of the area.

I actually had to have a big hematoma on my butt cheek (from taking a bad fall down a flight of stairs) surgically removed.

Wow ladysoth!

I guess I'll point it out to my physician the next time I see her.

Thanks for the input everyone!

I've had that happen before... when I was about 9 I was doing cartwheels in my house and whacked my leg on a desk.. it bruised up and I still have the bump, some 16 years later! I don't think it's really anything to worry about .. but would be worth a mention to your doc next time you see them.

It could be a keloid scar. I fell and bruised my knee and when it healed it was this raised bump. I went to a dermatologist and went for a few weeks. They did sterioid injections into the area which shrunk it down considerably. This was maybe 10 years ago, now just a small scar there.
