For the last several months, I've been addicted to bananas. I will sometimes eat 4-5 of them a day. Obviously, I get plenty of other types of food to round out my diet and don't feel any negative effects from it. But I do wonder if I'm getting too much of a good thing?
What do you guys think?

Isn't fruit the best?? Don't worry too much over it, but it would be much better to eat 5 different pieces of fruit a day rather than 5 bananas. Bananas are a great source of potassium, calcium and folate, which in turn help prevent muscle cramps, build better bones, balances blood pressure, and combats heart disease. The only serious concern would be if you have kidney disease/hyperkalemia, which in that case, too much potassium can be dangerous. If you're not experiencing side effects of this, then just continue to eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly. Even fruit, however, in excess can cause weight gain so be aware of that.
Just my 2 cents..

do bananas have a lot of calories?

I believe they have about 100 calories for a medium banana. Don't even worry about it....it's WAY healthier than eating a candy bar/chips for a snack. I just don't see how you can have that many and not be completely stuffed! Lol! Bananas are so filling to me! :)
I don't think it's necessarily bad, but why not try other fruits as well to get various vitamins and such?

As long as the caloric consequences of 4 or 5 bananas (about 500 calories) for into your diet scheme, then it's okay. If the 400 calories put you OVER, then cut back. Unless youy have sugar issues, they won't hurt you.
The nutrition of a banana is almost pure carbohydrate but 5 bananas also gives you about 15 grams of dietary fiber...a VERY colon-healthy amount, and a whopping dose of potassium, also good.

Just a word of warning that bananas can tend to be constipating if taken in excess!

I obviously don't eat them all at once. I might have one with breakfast, another mid-morning, maybe another couple in the afternoon or evening for a snack. I don't eat 4-5 every day, but lately it has been more than normal.
I still eat other fruits - lots of strawberries, apples, oranges, peaches, nectarines, etc. Bananas just seem to be the ones that carry well, since I'm on the go so much. Plus, I generally need a pick-me-up in the afternoons and they seem to do the trick better than any other fruit. I'm usually still hungry after I eat an apple, but not so after I eat a banana.
In any case, I've compensated for the calories in the rest of my diet and am not worried about that part of it. I was just curious if it was particularly bad for me to be eating so much potassium, for example.

If your kidneys are bad then too much potassium in the diet can lead to hyperkalemia, where the excess potassium in the blood is not excreted out by the kidneys.

i was concerned about the same thing as i eat complete excess of every fruit out there on a daily basis- i could go through 4 bananas, 2 cups blueberries, 3 apples, and 4 oranges in a day and it would be totally normal.. ive asked doctors and other about this since i eat extreme amounts of fruit but if youre not using it to replace other foods and it fits in to your caloric daily intake then go for it- just think- people eat an entire bag of chips or stack of cookies...you have absolutely nothing to worry about it! keep on munchin!

I just found out that bananas (along with strawberries, corn, apples, peaches, and green beans) are among the foods that are the most susceptible to pesticides. So I think you should eat them in moderation like everything else.
